Steel Pre Vizsla style build, suggestions?
« on: Mar 26, 2021, 10:56 AM »
Hello all :)

Going for a Pre Vizsla style as the base, but I'm stumped on what ear caps I should go with.

Any suggestions?

Your helmet doesn’t appear to be of the typical season 4/5 clone wars variant so I think the better question is what earcaps catch your fancy as the round ones you see on pre Vizsla’s helmet in the show have a bit more of a base to where they mount. Essentially you could go with anything that looks good on the helmet as it is a custom variant at this point!

Well tbh the seasons 4-5 variant of vizsla was used as a base.  I was just wondering if something more bulky or more streamlined would look best.  As the standard Pre ear caps are rather cumbersome imho.

I totally understand what you’re meaning there with bulky!
But to be honest you might be able to get away with some basic boba style earcaps with your design. Cardboard or paper templates are going to be essential in finding something that works!

Also I’m currently working on a pre Vizsla bucket myself and am considering doing one out of metal for the grins and giggles of it!

Cool!  I hope it goes well if you go the metal route :)

Update on helmet

I have painted and installed the visor, along with installing the internal padding.  Anyone who wants to share there thoughts please do so, helps me with creativity.

For the paint I went with a sand colored base, particularly inspired by kal skiratas sand tone.  With black as a secondary.  https://photos.app.goo.gl/ymNVgoaLQ7Pv2kET8

As for the pattern I just kinda went for it and changes along the way as needed.  Personally I'm very happy with the result :D:boba: :vizsla: :boba:

The padding used was a combo of airsoft/ach padding.  Along with some extra velcro thrown in for any future electronics.

This is neat, I've never seen a helmet with this style base before! I'm curious to see how it'll look with earcaps too.

I like the pattern with the black (especially the teeth!), but it does blend in with your visor, so you might consider whether you'd like to outline the edge of the visor. Although, the more I look at it, the more I like it without an outline too -- the vertical stripe draws the eye to the "hidden" visor in a way that's quickly growing on me!

Many thanks for the compliments!  I was partially inspired by the swtor/pre kotor mandos when it came to the paint job.  I actually have been considering turning this into a crusader build.

Ok so I asked the app team if earcaps are required for modern helmets and I got this response.

"Your helmet, as is, would not be approvable for Modern Era Mandos as it lacks key recognizable elements. To improve this, you'll need to at least add the following elements:

•Earcaps
•Key slots in the back
•Upper and Lower Cheeks more definition (here they look almost flat)"

So I suppose I'll have to figure out an earcap I like, however I did not think keyslots were in fact required...as if I remember there are various examples of modern Buy'ce that don't incorporate such (i.e Jaster Mereel).

Also as for cheek definition, I feel my helmet is more than defined enough.  However I did submit pics of it painted, and the black does seem to hide it.

Any suggestions from those more experienced?

From my experience the elements they suggested aren’t all required but adding as many of them to the helmet as possible greatly increase your chances of the design going through.  Keyslots don’t have to look like canon keyslots to pass either you can come up with a design that fits your aesthetic. The cheeks are shallow but I would send them photos of the helmwt in the bare metal state to show them there is definition there and some depth that they may not see in the painted helmet. As for earcaps. I’d say pick something that can make the height of the helmet not look so Easter island and look more proportionate.

I was actually considering maybe using an airsofts helmet tactical rail as my earcaps, but in your opinion would they look too earthy?  The reason I was considering them was to be able to easy mount/dismount flashlights and other such devices.

Also I really don't know if I can add keyslots at this point, but perhaps with the ear caps (whatever i end up going with)  will give it the push it needs to pass.  As my other helmet that passed also did not have keyslots.

As I was looking at your helmet before you painted it, I honestly thought you were going to talk about a neo crusader build.  Your bucket has VERY similar features to that era already.

But to piggyback on what Bowfanny said, I think bulkier earcaps would be really beneficial since your current helmet design doesn't have the traditional modern era feel to it. Tactical rails would not work because they're easily recognized as Earth objects. The same case would be made for the flashlights and other accesories that would sit on a tactical rail.

My suggestion would be to bulk out the earcaps in some way to offset the tall, narrow look.

I am still considering going crusader era, I have nothing against it.  In your opinion would it be more readily approvable for that era?

Also as for earth objects, I am curious as to why they are not allowed.  I.e some blasters in the OT were not even modified ww1 weapons.  I mean logos and stuff sure, but things like molle and tac rails are kinda used.  Albeit in slightly different appearance on a case by case basis.
