Flo Brin: Post Imperial Build Log
« on: Jul 15, 2021, 02:03 AM »
Hello! At the rate I was going with my threads, there were gonna be way too many and it was gonna be mega unorganized. I thought I'd do a normal build log here like a normal Mando. As the title says, this is a Post-Imp build! :<3:

I'll be uploading the whole album of concept art when I become an OM, but this is the costume blueprint for my Mando, Flo Brin. I'm a really avid artist and I love character design, so the whole process of designing her was mega fun! I worked with the ideas of having a good color story and an interesting character silhouette in mind. With Mandos creating an interesting shadow is especially important  so you can stay away from looking like a repainted Boba (which I feel like it is a fear that everyone has, haha). You wanna stand out and be iconic even when you look like a black void! Or a white void if someone were to stick you on the back of their car! ;D

I also put up a silhouette/height comparison between Flo and Din to help me and others visualize the size and shape differences. One day I'm hoping to maybe put up a little crash course on character design for fellow Mandos who may be having a hard time with the designing process. More into that in the near future, I guess.  For now, let's focus on Miss Brin.  ;)

So far a lot of progress has been made thanks to my Ruus'alor, fellow Vod, and my own stubbornness to get a project done. In order to make my topics easier to scroll through, I'll be posting a new comment under this one and update that one.

  :porg2: Tap for progress!  :porg2:

  :porg1: ALRIGHT, let's get this party started:porg1:

Chest Armor
Status: complete
End results: 6/01/2023

:boba: Update: 7/17/2021 :boba:

We started from this, a lovely pattern brought to you by ArmororProps on Etsy.

Next it was cut out of 3mm sintra and glued together with pvc cement (primed pvc primer first). I taped the pieces together in this to make sure all of my seams matched up.

Glued the pieces together and sanded down the seams, using both Bondo spot putty and body filler to get rid of the gaps.

Fiberglassed resined the back because 3mm sintra is weaker than my knees.

Oh, would you look at that. The aforementioned Bondo body filler that's hiding seams better than I used to hide snacks in my bed as a small foundling!

Primed and pretty using my favorite filler/primer ever from Duplicolor
if you use anything else you are deader to me than my last bounty

Sanded with wet or dry 400 grit sandpaper as gentle as Din is with Grogu.

:sabine: Update: 7/28/2021 :sabine:

Laid down some more filler/primer and wetsanded with 600, 800, and 1000 grit wetordry sandpaper.

Then I finally got to put down a base layer of Montana Metallic Silver. Will revisit it in 12 hours when the paint cures and will wetsand it.

:boba: Update: 6/01/2023 :boba:

Used same weathering technique I used with my bucket to block in battle damage: Liquid latex. Gross stuff, but beautiful results. I also had to sand and polish the texture off the paint.
(Wetsand with 600-2.5k grit sandpaper)

Masked off my design carefully, also laid down some more liquid latex for another layer of weathering.

Took the masking off before it cured, then let it fully cure over the course of two days before doing the wet sanding thing again. (Pro tip: use a cloth to further buff and polish finish after wet sanding.) This is what it looks like without any blackwash or other methods of weathering, just the color blocked weathering.

Did a blackwash with matte black acrylic paint. Will weather the armor further when all is said and done and the armor is mounted. Weathering more at the end helps with consistency, this has been my finding as a costume creator over the years.

Pauldrons
Status: Incomplete
End results: N/A

:cookie: Update: 7/18/2021 :cookie:

To ensure that I'd be happy with the way my pauldrons look in sintra, I made an eva foam mockup. I decided against adding any trauma plating underneath because I really like how it looks just clean and simple as is.

This is what the pieces look like all cut out. No bevel was needed.

In order to make the sintra fit together really nicely, I taped it together as I shaped it. I found that painters tape versus masking tape works the best for this method of shaping. I found that only slightly heating the sintra helps to smooth out shapes without leaving any indentations. If you do happen to leave any indentations, simply reheating the sintra will allow it to bounce back to some degree.

Both of the pauldrons all shaped and glued together! As usual, I used pvc cement and pvc primer. Seams are filled and smoothed using Bondo body filler.

Oooh, you know I'm following the heck outta your build!

I'm really intrigued by your attention to silhouettes and other design elements! I could certainly benefit from your crash course on character design whenever that gets going. My ~refined~ approach thus far has been to take everything I love and throw it together, resulting in things like the chrome, cape, and Amban rifle... I'm managing to approach "repainted Din" territory as opposed to "repainted Boba". :P I'll have to take a page out of your book and play up the silhouette-breaking elements of my kit!

Looking forward to more about Miss Brin!

Hopefully sometime soon! Been trying to write it out before I post it so that I can make sure everything is all concise and nice, I want it to be a quick, fun, and informative read!  :<3:

And honestly, if you wanna be an alt Din, you BE an alt Din! OWN alt Din!  Imagine it: They expect to see the mighty Din come out from the shadows only to see the fierce Arco, much to their dismay. They prepare for a battle that is SURE to be LEGENDARY, as for Arco? Well, the bounty is in the bag, that foe is going down.

Just remember that it okay for ideas to change! If you come up with something for your Mando, there is absolutely no harm in conceptualizing it. What really matters is that you're happy with what you've made! More importantly, have fun with it!

I am also very excited to delve more into the creation of Flo!  :porg2:
