Backpack project
« on: Jan 01, 2021, 02:48 AM »
I had been kicking around the backpack idea for a while. I'd gotten hung up on the idea of using an alice pack frame, but ended up deciding against it. The main purpose was to get the excess items off my belt and chest strap.

I ended up buying an old boy scout yucca backpack. I tried a few things to fill out the inside. Wicker basket worked well but added weight. I put together a cardboard box, reinforced in several areas to fill it out and keep it light. So far its the best option.

With paracord thru the d rings on the side I have the blaster on one side and a moisture vaporator canteen on the other, with a ring of trophies above it. I mounted the flash grenades on, reworked my bes'bev holder and attached it, did a little painting and weathering.

I need to lengthen the shoulder straps because it was made for a child, not a grown man in space armor. I have heavy leather straps, chicago screws and d-rings coming in for that. Plus I want to add leather straps over the grenades and the co2 canister casts to add as gauntlet reloads. I reworked an ak mag pouch to hold my macros. Itll be attached to the bottom of the bag. I have a sword coming in as well from one of my clan members that I plan to attach too.

The canister casts and macro pouch that are going on next.

Leaning towards the blaster rifle but i could use the smaller blaster on it instead. Which one do you think looks better?

Ill finish it up when the rest of the supplies arrive.

Heres my kit on a mannequin in my living room. So you can see what its matched with and for size perspective on the backpack. Until I let the shoulder straps out it'll barely fit on the mannequin, let alone me in full kit.

backpacks coming along. replaced the shoulder straps with leather ones. i rebuilt the velleman into a small pouch instead of my old chest box. rebuilt an ak mag pouch for the macros and mounted it to the bottom of the bag. i scrapped the cardboard box inside to fill it out and rebuilt one in perforated metal. this allowed me to sink all the chicago screws mounting things to it to be fed into the inner box and not just through the fabric.  including the leather plate under the top of the shoulder straps to keep it from drooping there.

today i added a cobra buckled chest strap between the backpack shoulder straps. i mounted the pouch that the velleman is in to it. i changed out all the gold d rings on the bag with black ones. also made leather straps to hold canteen in place. the bottom one has a ring thru it to hold the canteen spout. the strap and buckle from my ammo bag strap was cut down and mounted over the flash grenades. i split the trophies up and spread them around the bag instead of one big cluster of them. i removed the rifle, i think im going to retire it. not sure what its going to be replaced with yet.

comm unit installed

Finished the harness for the moisture vaporator canteen

And then added similar straps over the comm unit

Wow, thank you. You shouldnt feel that way. The backpack was the hardest part of my kit to design by far. Not a ton of reference for them. It took me a year to decide what i wanted to do with it and what parts to use. I figured use what they would have used, and theres precedent for surplus and boyscout packs and frames, so i started with a vintage scout pack. Most of the stuff that went on it, like the grenades, bes'bev, canteen, trophies, etc... were elsewhere on my kit before the pack build.  Much of this build was to reposition weight on my kit more comfortably.

I appreciate your kind words, but dont sell yourself short. Im sure youll come up with one even better.

theres is a box made out of perforated metal sheets i got from home depot inside.

everything thats chicago screwed to the outside also goes through the metal inner layer. that way the pack keeps its shape and everything on it has a solid anchor.
