Adding more grip?
« on: Nov 20, 2021, 01:12 PM »
Hey gang! I recently purchased this DE-10H from a vendor on the forums here, experience was great. I love the beefy nature of it, good print, etc.
However the grip is just a tad short for my hand, I would like to have maybe another inch to inch and a half on the end. I've looked around some for anyone else doing this but no luck. Any suggestions or ideas? Only thing I've come up with is maybe a big wad of apoxie sculpt shaped nicely and with a screw through it to hold it in place? Is apoxie sculpt strong enough to hold a screw? Or some sintra panels extending the line of the grip and fill the middle with something?

Maybe an oval of sintra at the bottom to act as a washer and impact guard? Then shape the edge flush with your sculpie.

That’s a good idea! I’ve looked into the apoxie stuff a little more (never used it before) and I think it could work. I like the Sintra washer idea, maybe a whole cap of sorts around the bottom? Since this will stick out in its holster and bonk tables and stuff I worry it will bust apart. Maybe that’s overkill.

The only wrong way to do it is one that falls off, really.
Alternate, but similar solution: Cut a 6mm wide slot (about two table saw blades wide!) down the center of the handle, maybe at most an inch into it.  Cut a sintra profile of the handle extension with a tab that fits into the slot, glue the heck out of it/screw it in place/whatever permanent attachment method. Use apoxie or similar to sculpt the grip around the sintra profile, sand/prime paint away. You can add a butt cap to it still, I'm envisioning a square slot in the cap and a tab on the butt end of the sintra grip extender to give better gluing/cementing surface area. Sand the tab flush and spot fill smooth.

This would give you a stable base for your sculpting work, and a mechanical attachment to the main body - always better than just adhesives by themselves. It may also help give a physical base for a 'metal core with slabs of grip material on the sides' look for your handle paint job.

Good luck, the blaster is pretty cool already.

I love this place. Any time I get stuck some folks here have an incredible set of solutions. I spin them together and smack myself for not thinking of something so simple in the first place! A solid wad of Sintra, cleaned up with filler - not a wad of filler just banged on there.  :o

The grip panel lines on the model are nice and simple, no reason I couldn’t transfer them along to the grip extension for a clean look. I’m planning for a copper or brass look for the grip “plates” (shared across all weapons on the kit) so it needs to look nice.

Thanks folks!
