Matchstick’s RotJ Boba Fett WIP.
« on: Oct 19, 2021, 08:52 PM »
Hello everyone! I recently stumbled upon a good deal on a set of Wasted Fett RoTJ armor and since I’ve always dreamed about making a Fett I’ve decided to jump off the deep end.

This is my first venture into a canon build and I know it’s whole different animal so I’m looking forward to working with those of you with much more experience then myself.

I haven’t quite decided on wether I’ll do a RoTJ or a RoTJ SE yet, that decision will be made shortly.

A few questions right off the bat.

1- I know arkady on TDH seems to be the gold standard when it comes to vest/flight suit/neck seal. Besides her is there any other recommendations for the soft parts? I’m just trying to see what’s out there.

2- I bought a Fett helmet from lone wolf customs a while ago so I could practice that incredible paint job. I know that helmet isn’t  that accurate, and I don’t plan on using it.  Any recommendations on helmets? I know minutefett sells a resin cast but I don’t know what the general thought was towards it.

Any other recommendations or advice for a newbie? I’d love to hear it!

Edit
Reading Az’s jango wip has put me on DHPFX. They have a real nice vac formed gauntlet kit which I’m eyeing. I might go that route.

I can vouch for DHPFX.  I had a back plate from them before I went to legacy plates.   :boba:

Biggest thing to figure out is if you want to go Straight up ROTJ or ROTJ SE, and if you're wanting the SE edition, which version of that suit.

Arkady is a great starter suit as it comes pre-dyed so it might only require a little correction on your end.

Minutefett is a good option. I know Wasted Fett sold a lot of his molds to someone else.

The Lonewolf helmet would be a great practice option, but wouldn't be approvable without all the added physical scratches and markings.

I’ve decided to go for RoTJ SE, since it incorporates a lot of nods to the esb helmet paint job. I’ve not been able to find a lot of information on the different versions of the SE suit however. Where’s a good place to find that?
A lot of the stuff on TDH is broken down into esb and RoTJ but, for example, I don’t see any helmet stencil layouts for the SE.

Thanks Druj! I’ve added those gaunts to my short list of parts.

I’ll probably have 7cs cast my jet pack, I really like the look of his kits.

Here’s a few of the pieces laid out. Comparing them to my current plates they are almost identical in size so I’m happy about that.

And finally yeah I’ve decided to paint up that lone wolf bucket as simply a practice piece to get some experience for when I jump into the real thing.

Edit
What’s the general consensus on MOW flight suits? I know they come white so it would needed dyed.

I also have DHP/FX Boba Fett style bracers. My whole kit (except the helmet and codpiece) is made of his plates. I highly recommend him.

Thanks Tramp for the good review!

So I’ve been doing some more research (tho I don’t ever think the research will ever be completed  ??? ). I’m going to lay it out and if (and when) I’m mistaken please correct me.

1. RoTJ SE has 2 sub categories, the first being the one shown on screen and is missing certain parts. The second is the 1997 promo outfit made for advertising the Special Edition. The promo version is the one I want to go for, as personally it’s what comes to my mind when I think of “Boba Fett”

2. The SE version is basically the ESB helmet on the RoTJ body. So if I’m thinking correctly I should be able to use this stencil.

This is the stencil for ESB taken from TDH.

3. If I’m right about the helmet then my final question is do I buy a esb or RoTJ sculpt of the helmet?

Ok that’s all the questions I’ve got for the moment. More to come I’m sure.

You want the ESB Helmet, but keep in mind when it was used for SE filming there was almost 20 years of use and abuse between ESB and SE.

Copy that, esb but with some extra lovin.

Has anyone done a paint up using Montana paints? I’m having an extremely difficult time sourcing rust-oleum paints online. Or even if I can get a good 1-1 color comparison, eyeballing it on a screen isn’t really doing the trick.

…might have to resort to airbrushing…tho I’m not great with one.

I've heard very good things about the Montana paints. From what I hear it is like an artist grade rattle cans. I don't have any first hand experience but I  want to say I sa them at Michael's

Jaster Fett has extensive experience with rattle can Fetts.

I personally air brush all my stuff.

Generally acrylic, but sometimes enamels.

I vastly prefer acrylic, but work has me using enamels, lacquers, and other industrial products.

Alright went to a few hobby stores today and I’ve got what I could in humbrol acrylics and the rest I cross referenced TDH humbrol paint list with vallejo paints. So I have enough to do the helmet with the airbrush.

I also have the Hunt club green and yellow line stripe that is used for the armor.

My plan is to paint up the helmet I have currently with a mix of rattle cans and airbrush to hopefully practice the weathering.

I’m glad it at least LOOKS like I’ve got a plan ;)

Alright progress has been made. I’ve found just about all of the paint I’ll need, mostly airbrush some rattle can, especially for the armor.

I’ve got a MoW flight suit that I’ll grab some pics of just because. It’s straight  white so I’ll be dyeing it. I found what looks to be a great dye tutorial on TDH so I’ll be trying that out on some fabric swatches I’ve got.

My vest and neck seal are on order from arkady. She’s projecting a 3-4 month turn around. So I’ve got some time to kill. The majority of which will be spent trying to paint this whole thing

Jet pack kit is on order from 7cs_prop aka Darth Voorhees and should be ready to ship in a week or 2.

I’ve been looking all over for templates for the SE helmet paint job. I was hoping some existed like the ones available for the esb and RoTJ but I’ve yet to find them. I know the paint job is very similar to esb so I think if I use those templates along with some good reference pics I *should* be able to muddle out a passable paint job. We will see :-X

Alright I’ve got a coat of metallic aluminum down and I’ve started to use the RoTJ templates from TDH.

I’ve come across a question regarding the weathering on the ab plate.

As you can see “kinda” from this picture there’s no silver visible.

However in this picture the silver is visible.

But it looks nothing like the stenciled damage, which should look a bit like this. (Marked in pencil)

But going to the SE promo pics it’s again not visible.

So…I just want to make sure, since it’s not in that promo pic I should leave out that silver weathering. Even tho it’s visible at a later date on the ab?

Stick to one set of references because you're very likely looking at two different ab plates despite the paint being similar.

You'll also need to fill the dent in the right chest plate.  That's an ROTJ thing, not SE.

One set of images is definitely the best advice, thank you. And yeah I was nothing there’s a silver mark but no dent in that area in those pictures. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

You're doing one of the hardest Fetts out there due to the dizzying amount of parts that are swapped in and out to make a "complete" Fett.

Keep at it, man. You're doing really good!

Thanks for the kind words guys :D its definitely a bit different since I was expecting to be able to use the stencils without modding them but I’m slowly wrapping my head around everything.

I’ve changed up the weathering on the ab to more closely match these references.

A few more tweaks here and there but it’s coming along.
