How well can you hear while wearing helmet?

I have already researched voice amps because I expect to not be heard while wearing a helmet since I have been told I have a soft voice.

I am wondering how well one is able to hear while wearing the bucket and if there are any hearing "aids" that will help with that.

There's a few ways that I've seen discussed and installed while reading through the forum - you can use something like external mics mounted to your helmet - either using larger mics that can be turned into greeblies or small ones inside with a little hole drilled into the helmet so they can pick up.

From there it's how the audio reaches you - the MMCC Youtube channel has a really cool video about external mics linked to bone transducers; You can install small speakers in your helmet (re-used old headphones would work).

Check this thread on the Mercs Forum, this vod does a great job integrating electronics into their bucket.

There's the option of using some noise-cancelling headphones linked to an external hearing aid in a belt pouch - lower cost, less wiring. It may interfere with an amp though.

The simplest option is to have slots in your helmet's ear-caps that let you hear more clearly, but that would need to be done carefully to look good. Openings backed by perforated metal may do the trick there.

I haven’t had any problem hearing while wearing my helmet, and, given that I have a loud voice as well, I doubt I will need a mic and amplifier.

Over 13 years with the Mercs, I've found that, well, you just can't hear a thing in these helmets.  Really though, you can hear, but it's a little muffled.  Nothing that you can't live with unless you're already a little hearing-impaired.  Quiet talking you won't hear, but medium volume conversation is audible.
