Magnet size
« on: Jan 17, 2010, 12:41 AM »
I'm planning on using rare earth magnets to attach at least my chest armor to my vest and my thigh plates to my flightsuit. I've been looking at KJMagnetics.com for the right magnets and I think that the DC03 size is appropriate for attaching my armor.

The stage 3 pull strength isn't listed for any of the larger magnets, sooooo...
Can anyone vouch for these magnets or similar ones as to how well they hold under "dynamic movement stress"?
(As in, running, crouching, and active movement such as the kinds experienced whilst airsofting.)
Thanks, Vode!  :D

the ones I use are from hobby lobby, they're 3/4" x 3/16" and come 51 to a pack. they're out out by the magnet source and the part# is Part No. 07049. nice thing is they only run about 6 bucks for the pack

Hmmm... Any suggestions for K'raam metal armor? I dont want to put holes let alone rip the awesome pleather vest Mar' made for me. I was thinking putting the magnets along the inside the vest... I just want to know if they will even be strong enough to hold. And considering the weight of metal, what size/strength should I get. I...dont know much about magents...

There are some magnets at KJMagnetics that have up to thirty pounds of pulling force if you secure another piece of steel behind the magnet and your steel armor. Considering that's per magnet, that should be plenty.

I ws thinking of rare earth ore magnets as well. be great to conect the armour to the vest. How well would they work as conectors for the sides of gauntlets, thigh and shin peices?

I know the attempt tk2280 made for my shins ended badly with rare earth magnets.. Not sure if that was due to lining/angle issues or what, I just know they wouldn't line up to close right.

Might be worth a try. I know some Clones and Stormies have throuble with the same thing even with velcro. Tricky problem.

Not to thread-jack, but this seemed the best place to ask it.. Looking at getting the magnets from Hobby Lobby like Zevlar suggested. I'm using sintra armor and am going to try and JB weld the armor magnets on.. How would one attach them to the soft parts?

Good question Ijaat.

I'd sew a small pocket that fits the magnet bygetting fabric the same type and color as the vest.  Sewing three side leaving one side open to slid the magnet in, then sew closed.

Now, I don't think it would, but will all of these magnets affect anything like a pacemaker or hospital equipment? Friend of mine seems convinced they will.

Haha!
I got my magnets today. These things are so strong, that when I tried to pick one up off the table with the rest of the stack, the first two actually shattered!   :o ;D
