Jetpack as COVID filter/air conditioner?
« on: May 05, 2022, 07:20 PM »
Hey Mando Family,

I've been working on my kit in a start-and-stop fashion ever since COVID hit.  I've had a hard time finishing any one thing, but I keep trying.  :)

One of the things I thought about was, what with COVID and such was, how were we ever going to go back to conventions?  I'd also heard about how hot it can get with all that gear on, especially with most cons being in the summertime.

The idea I came up with was to make a jetpack that was also an air filtration system, and maybe throw in a bit of cooling to boot.  I've gone through a lot of designs, but this one seems the most promising so far (still a work in progress):

Front

Back, with batteries currently exposed (WIP)

Top, showing the cold/filtered-air circuit.

Bottom, showing the hot-air circuit.

Air Exchange Layer.

I took inspiration from the NJP-900 jetpack for the exhaust, but changed the air intake a bit to make a "two circuit" air system work.

The idea was to push some air into the back of the suit and more into the helmet via gas mask tubing from the jet pack into the back of the helmet.

However, I just read that Post-Imperial Pilot outfits were not being accepted at this time.  My plan was to have the tubing in the back, and not necessarily be a "pilot" per se, but I understand it would still look, uh, "Pilot-y".

What's the thinking on this?  It would be for safety, etc.

Personally, I think it’s too cumbersome and unnecessary. This is particularly since Covid has basically run its course. The current variants are far less dangerous and certainly no longer pandemic levels since most people have at least some degree of immunity as it is, either through vaccinations or having had the disease.

My suggestion is, if you want a jet pack, make it as light as possible, with minimal internal systems for special effects only.

Personal perspectives on COVID aside, the jet pack is actually quite small and not that cumbersome, but it has some weight, for sure - I figure it would be about 12 lbs. completely assembled.  I've had heavier packs on 20km road marches in the day, and heck, my laptop backpack is heavier, but I do get your point that comfort is important in cosplay.

If all I wanted was an air filter, I could easily make it for 1/5 of the weight - it wouldn't weigh much more than a fiberglass shell.

That's why it's also an air conditioner - it has a heat exchanger and pumps cold air through the small of the back and through the helmet, while expelling hotter air through the rocket exhausts.  No sticky, sweaty mess in the hot summer sun.

But my point to this post was to check in with the approving body to get a verdict on whether I should continue this or not - if a jetpack with gas mask tubing to the back of a helmet would be permitted in Post-Imperial timeline.

I doubt it, but I'm not a member of the APP team, just someone still working on his kit. This is a question you might want to put to the APP team through the Q&A. At the very least, talk to your Ruus'alor.

The design looks cool. It reminds me of the clone jetpacks from battle front. The fact that it's designed to have a functional use does bring it to a whole other level. I'd say go with it but of course be careful with CRL's and such.  :like:
