WIP - PI Soft Parts
« on: Dec 27, 2020, 12:51 AM »
First, here is a link to my concept page https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=192583.0

Second, here are my scrubs after fitting and the second picture is after the long sleeves were sewn in. I still plan to adjust the sleeve and leg length but I am waiting for boots and gauntlets before I remove any more material.

Third, here is my vest. I still need to adjust the length but I am waiting to finish my sash & belt. I used a zipper and velcro for closure where the grey and black meet. I may make some design additions/changes but this is where I am for now.

This picture is just a pride shot as this was the first piece of clothing I've ever sewn.

Fourth, here is my sash. I didn't want vertical velcro for closure at the back and decided wrapping it around instead. Here is how it will look before a belt wrapped overtop. I still need to trim the ties to length add velcro to the end of each end to hold it in place until the belt goes on.

It is a 5 inch tube of fabric tapered and sewn to an ~2 inch tube of fabric. Each taper is slanted to the opposite side allowing for the profile seen above.

They are able to meet on top by having the bottom tie pass through the main wrap

Plans (in order):
1) Finish sash
2) Make belt
3) Hem vest & make neck seal
4) Find boots
5) Make/find gaiter for right leg
6) Hem pants
7) Hem sleeves (once gauntlets are made)

Updates:
Finished my sash. Below is a picture of it over my vest with the belt blank for reference. In retrospect, I wish I had kept the vest a little longer. It still goes past my belly button and is covered by the sash but it is harder to pull flat now. I'll probably make a button or suspender connection to my pants to help it hold position better if the armor doesn't weigh it down enough.

I started the underbelt, at least that is what I am calling it. The belt design is two layers with a thinner outer belt weaving through a wider inner/under belt. Below is a drawing of what I mean.

Testing closure of the underbelt. Groove line isn't symmetrical but I'm new to leatherworking and it will mostly be hidden. The webbing will be sewn to the other end of the leather in order to make the underbelt adjustable. eventually it will be covered by the leather outer belt so you won't see much of the webbing.

Belt Updates:

I made a design change by adding stitched on loops rather than cutting loops out of the belt's body. The later would have worked after I added the liner, but I thought this would be more sturdy. If I did it again, I'd have cut out openings for the loops to pass through and stitched the ends to the back instead of the front. Today was filled with lessons.

I was able to put on the three loops, cut the lines for my stitching, and oiled the belt. The hatch framing is for securing the webbing to the back. The webbing will be slid through the slot at the end so the leather end doesn't flop or bend outward.

Test fit of the belt blank going through the loops. Definitely snug, but it will loosen with time and once I round the edges.

Next Saturday I'll tackle the stitching and inner liner. I have no doubt it will take me a couple of Saturdays.

Figured I should post progress as I move along for posterity. This is my first leatherworking project so take it all with a grain of salt.

1) To make the soft inner liner I cut a piece of EVA foam to the belt's width. Then I angled the foam edges (not shown).

2) I cut out a softer leather about 1/2" wider than the foam and used contact cement to hold them together.

3) I oiled the leather and now I am ready to sew it to the belt. I am using double-sided tape to hold the piece together while I sew.

I am going to burnish the belt edges while the leather dries and hopefully I can finish the sewing today.

Inner Belt completed! Took my all day to hand sew. Of course, in my excitement I put it on and cut the webbing to size...only to realize I sized it without my vest & sash on  :-[. Thankfully I was able to sew the webbing back together (if you look closely at the webbing you can see where the fix is) and it works fine.

Next step: Outer Belt

The last two months really flew with school becoming busier by the day. Finally had a chance to work on my kit and happy to say the entire belt is finished!

Took a break from working on my kit to make a tool roll for my leatherworking supplies. On the plus side, this was also a test run for a tool roll I plan to add to my kit as a leg bag.

It's been a while but I haven't quit the marathon. The half-chap is complete. This will hide the fact that I cut down my boot to fit it to my prosthetic. My goal is to create a cybernetic leg with an old prosthetic once I am OM.
