WIP - Armin's tribute armor soft parts
« on: Aug 17, 2020, 10:22 PM »
Hi everyone, my name is Armin Garcia and I'm from BigFang Clan in Mexico. I started my kit a few months ago and decided to get all my soft parts before the armor and weapons, except the waist items which will be the last thing I'll get. This is a basic initial design that I made, I call it the Mark I or Light version which will be my initial version for my application.

A friend made this flight suit for me which is basically an imperial flight suit without pockets and in a different color, I got the work boots at a local department store and the gloves from a local shoe and leather market, I already weathered all these parts and I plan to have extensive battle damage as seen in the images.

Flight suit chest, I made the white-pinkish stain using chlorine bleach, I don't like how it looks but it will be covered by the vest and I might cover it up with some dry mud too, I also used some black spray paint and coal.

Flight suit lower back. I used white acrylic paint and I didn't like how it looks either but again most will be covered by the vest, the rest and specially the parts at the lower back will be covered with other types of weathering and/or by a kama I'll make later.

Left glove knuckles, most of the weathering on these was made by rubbing the gloves with sandpaper of different grits.

Left glove fingers

Right glove knuckles

Right glove fingers

Right boot outside shank

Right boot outside shaft

Left boot external shank

Left boot external shaft

For the dry mud effect on the boots I took brown acrylic paint and brushed it with a toothbrush and alcohol to fade the leather but since the toe cap was made of steel I hit it with a brick too and made some superficial slahes as well. I also ran over the flight suit with the car and slashed it a bit, but these two made some cuts in it (one on the chest near the black stain, one on the lower left leg and one on the left bicep) so I had to sew them by hand with a slightly clearer thread. I particularly liked how the cut in the bicep looked after sewing it because it looked like a quick battlefield repair after someone tried to stab me.

The next step for now is the vest which I'll either try to make myself or ask a friend who is a seamstress to make it, I want to use a dark grey duck cloth but I can't find any at the local fabric stores so I might use synthetic leather from the same market where I got the gloves. For waist items I want to have a single ammo/holster belt and a green sash but an alternative is using two belts. The belt or belts would be made by a friend from brown leather with 4 to 8 Boba pouches,Sabine Wren holsters and an imperial buckle in which I might engrave the mythosaur. If I make a sash I might use a gabardine or tergal fabric.

Hope you like my progress here. :mtu: It's not much but I hope to get more things done as soon as I can,for now I'm doing a lot of research and saving money for materials and tools,I might make some more weathering to the flight suit too.

Minor update:

I recently bought faux leather for my flak vest. I was going to use duck cloth but I saw this and just bought it right then and there. I got 2 meters which should be more than enough and maybe even enough for a kama as well. Since it's black and not the light grey I was looking for I had to alter my design a bit for a shiny black vest with matte black plates. I also have to make a neck seal which I plan to make from this and attach it to the vest.

Not really an update but I promise I haven't abandoned this project. Real life has sucked a lot lately and I likely won't be able to do much on my kit for now because of school but I wanted to keep you all posted.

Thank you all for your patience and I will try to get some real progress here as soon as I can. :mtu:

This WIP is more dead than Padmé but not for long. :P

Wow, over a year without posting in this thread. I had several school problems that took priority but now I hope I can continue with my kit.

In short I redesigned my kit (again) into what is now the Mk III. In the future I hope to be able to apply in the Environmental Operations brigade as a Mountain Ops specialist so first I wanted to change basic things so once I'm an OM I'll only have to change a few stuff, so I changed the proportions and color tones. I also went back to the idea of the kama and other weapons and accessories. :mtu:

For now I bought fabric to make the sash and kama. The sash will be made out of an army/dark olive green tergal while the kama will be gray duck cloth with a green tergal trim. I plan to make a kind of harness to mount the kama below the sash, while the sash would close with these hook-and-eye clasps on the inside so they will not be visible. The sash is approx 1x1.6 meters and when folded it is about 40cm wide and appears to wrap around my torso about 4 times.

I also got this handheld sewing machine. I hope to be able to do most of the parts myself to learn sewing.  ;D

Regarding the other soft parts (flight suit, neck seal, vest and gloves) I plan to continue now with the flight suit and the vest. I have black synthetic leather but it's not the right color so I'll look for dark brown as well as some kind of coverall that I can use as a flight suit. If possible, I would like to integrate the neck seal to the flight suit as a kind of turtle neck. Any recommendations for industrial coveralls that I can modify to do this?

Boots will remain the same and are a little more worn from normal use, while I'll also try to replace the gloves if I can. They still work but they are already falling apart and I have some gray ones made of fabric but I will look for other brown ones made of leather or something similar.

That's it for now, wish me luck! :mcq1:
