Aster's s4 sabine!
« on: May 23, 2022, 05:19 PM »
Okay okay decided to start this  :sabine:
Everything is still in the planning stage but I wanted to okay things with experts/brigade marshals before I really started since ideally I'd be going for canon brigades with this.
Since there are no BRLs for this sabine, only CRLs, I'm working off of those.

First big purchase is the NME sabine helmet, which seems like the go to choice and shouldn't be a crl problem.
I plan to sew the flightsuit myself. I spoke a lot with Sabine of Tracor clan and I bought the fabric she used for her epilogue sabine which should be good since she's approved. The fabric website had some problems with shipping so I'm trying to get that to me soon!
For the armor I plan to do it myself with 6mm sintra. The shoulders will be a 90 degree pvc pipe cut out.
No idea about the boots, I'm just going to search stores irl since I want them to fit really well.
The leather parts are by far my biggest expense. Darman's props on etsy sells both belts and the flare holsters, and they seem to be accurate. I really have no leather skills so I'll probably end up buying the leather parts.

Glove are from amazon

Gauntlets will hopefully be 3d printed by a friend from the april storm files.

Since the blasters are "Animated Clone Wars style pistols" I'll be making them myself out of sintra.
Sabine from Tracor has been helping me with wig stuff, ultimately the least exciting aspect since I've only done minimal styling with wigs. TBD
Comlink is on hold until I figure out the belt situation and I'll ake it to fit the holder. TBD
Jetpack and paint sprayer are optional sooooo at least for basic approval I won't be doing those.

Next step is to get the fabrics and start drafting the flightsuit, while also researching paint colors!
Never done a canon build before so any guidance is super welcome!

Okay so everyone is probably super busy at celebration but I have two questions.

1. Can I make and be approved with a light armor version (and also the action armor)?
Other seasons of sabine have the two armor versions and season 4 has both as well but there's no CRL for it. It would be nice to have both versions approved if I don't feel like fully kitting up?
This is the "light" version

Vs. the action one

Just a difference of less armor, and no ammo belt/leg bandoleers.

2. Does anyone understand how the jetpack is attached? From photos there seems to be some sort of gray backplate but I have no good photos. How have other Sabines done it?

Here's a whole bonch of photos that show it! It really confuses me lol. It's definitely smaller than the jetpack amd white/gray but I'm unsure of anything else.

I've made a huge google drive of references which has been SO helpful. Literally went through every single episode in season 4, doing my homework!

I believe season 1 is only approvable as light, season 2 only as action, and season 3 both versions are permitted? I don't know that it's come up for season 4, would be a good time to use the ask the app team form.

Darmans are pretty accurate. You will need to add the silver rectangle "closure" to the big cargo pouch, which a piece of painted sintra or an aluminum sliver would work fine. He does have the rivets on both sides of the holsters which a lot of Sabine's miss, so that's a plus. He also does have good customer service and ships quickly.

I've avoided the jetpack versions for exactly that reason. There's a couple options - 1) you could make a harness/bra with rare earth magnets strong enough to hold through the fabric 2) make two flight suit tops and do velcro on one so you can switch out depending on how much you feel like wearing. Downside with number 2 is that you'd have to reattach and space all your armor everytime you kit up.

So for the different types of armor (light and action) it seems like there just isn't a season 4 light CRL, she's clearly in a different set of armor/belts, just like in season 3. I can totally provide a lot of pictures if needed.
Thanks for the opinions on the belts, it seems easy to add the closure. I've purchased a few items from him and he has wonderful quality.
I'm not quite sure what to do with the jetpack honestly. I looked at this thread by Aliyaj and she uses the gray backplate so I will definitely be using that.

I think the goal for the jetpack is just to make it as light as possible with 3mm sintra and I like Aliyaj's method of attaching it to the shoulders, I think attachment will be a lot of trial and error in the future and I think your magnet suggestion could help.

No major updates but I purchased my NME helmet and have been looking at montana gold paints.

Long time no post!
With life, work, and now covid  :'(, I haven't had much time to write updates.

First up is the lovely boots... they are SO comfy! I'm going to paint the tan stripe black and then start on the paint splatters when I find the matching paint colors.

Here's me wearing them, please excuse my AWESOME shorts which Sabine herself would love.

Then the wig! Again, the awesome Sabine from Tracor helped me find it, and I'm going to start the long process of coloring and styling it. I bought some brown and dark purple alcohol markers (they're artist's loft brand) to dye it, I'm a bit nervous since I don't have much wig experience and have never colored a wig before, but I'm excited to try!

Now the main attraction, the armor!
I'm using 6mm sintra since my Ruus'alor recommended using thicker armor for animated characters and I totally agree. A bit harder to shape but it feels so much more durable than my normal armor.
First thing I did was make everything out of cardboard so I knew it all fit right. After I got the boots I made the shin armor pattern out of plastic wrap and duct tape. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to do the boot plate so that's kind of tbd.

The most challenging was the chest pieces and the shoulders, since they're both curved and require darts. I went through a few drafts for each but finally found a design that worked.

For the chest I'm a little worried the iron heart is a little too wide but I'm going to cut and shape everything and I can easily trim it down.

Currently for armor I only have the one shoulder piece, covid is hitting a little hard so I'm not spending hours heating and sanding. Maybe next week!
Obviously when hand making and shaping a piece it gets lumpy, so I put in a lot of effort to make it look symmetrical. As of now it's not 100% smooth but I think it's about as symmetrical/in shape as I can get it.

I guess that's all for now! Oya  :sabine:

Trying to get back to this build! I think posting about it will put some pressure on me to actually make some progress. Been doing a lot of ordering materials but haven't had much time to actually build due to school and lack of space in my apartment.

I recently received this beautiful NME helmet, looks a little big but I believe with the shoulder pieces (and maybe a bit of padding underneath) it should be good.

Next steps are to cut out all of the armor, and order the material for the flightsuit. I'm super nervous about sewing it but I'm trying to believe in myself. Will probably do a mock up soon and run it by folks to make sure it looks okay.

Just wanted to say I love tge work so far.

I'm pretty sure the jetpack is just attached by animation magic, so maybe a small back plate is the way to go?
