WIP Kal Skirata
« on: Jul 19, 2022, 06:27 PM »
Hi all,

Here's the start of my Kal Skirata WIP thread. I don't have the armor pieces yet, and the helmet is in the mail (all 3-d printed), so all I've got so far are reference pics (below).

There was a guy a few years ago who did a Kal build, so I'll definitely be using his build for reference. https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=19188.0
(And the CRL, of course.)

My plan for the armor is to 3D print it all for accuracy. I don't think I can get the angles 100% accurate with sintra.

Anyhow, I'll post updates once I start on the helmet and get more armor pieces. I've built clone armor before, but this is my first mando build for approval so all advice is appreciated.

Oya!

Admittedly, this isn't a CRL I haven't looked at in a minute, but I applaud you for taking on a challenging build.

The important thing to consider when doing a character like this is to figure out which images of him are actual LFL images vs. fan art.

When the app team or Brigades goes to judge a kit, we're looking at the official LFL images, which is why it's important we figure that out.

Like your previous builds, I know you have the skill to knock this out of the park, so I'll let you do your thing while I figure out which pictures of him are LFL.

The bottom image is legit. The top one isn't. Check Wookieepedia for any and all Kal Skirata images you need.

Neat! Looking forward to seeing this come together.

Question - what do you mean by 3D printing the armor to get the angles correct? Personally, I would suggest using sintra for all the traditional styled armor plating. It's cheap, easy to work with - heating, sizing, shaping, and cutting compared to 3D printed props, and a huge time saver as you don't have to wait hours on end for each part to print plus you won't have to fill and sand any print lines. Just use a metal ruler when cutting the plates out of sintra for the straight lines. There isn't anything special about his plates that are any different from the Jango Fett plating so should be easy peasy to use sintra/PVC foam board.

So far as I can tell the below are LFL images of Kal and will be the primary images used by the Application Team or Brigades, should you choose to go that route for comparison.

Thanks for these --- very helpful. I was having a hard time sorting through fan art vs. canon images. Much appreciated!

Good question. I heard from some of my clan that making sintra canon-accurate is very difficult - particularly for builds like Jango (which is essentially the same as Kal's) My thought is that it's easier to just buy the 3d print so that I don't have to mess with making plates identical - especially the chest plates. I think I could cut the sintra correctly, but shaping it would be tough since I've never worked with it before. I might try sintra for the leg armor, though.

Thanks all for the advice/pictures!

it's pretty easy to make them identical (though no one is going to take a ruler to them to make check ). Once the PVC foam board is cut - tape them together and see if there are any areas where one may be larger than the other. If one is a little larger - just sand that section while they are taped together.

Easy peasy.

Shaping is also pretty easy. I heat up larger pieces in the oven on it's lowest setting for about a minute then you just press it to your chest.
You have to get the 3D print essentially perfect for you body type prior to printing because there isn't much else you can do to fix it once it's printed.

That being said - obviously you are free to do whatever you deem is easiest for you lol

Nice to see your thread Cap!
I definitely second Fenn, in my experience it's much easier (and cheaper) to work with sintra, and it's very easy to get the right shapes and angles. I only use 3d prints for very small details like gauntlets or a detailed blaster. I can look for some sintra jango/modern builds for inspiration/help if you want. At a glance, it looks like the previous maker of Kal also made most of their armor from sintra (or a similar material), with the backplate and gauntlets looking either vacuformed or 3d printed. Again that's just from looking and not combing through their methods.
I would love to help you shape your plates if you're still in the same area in the fall, give you some tips and get a second pair of hands working on this. Obviously clan armor parties are great too but if we're still a pretty close distance I'm down to help! PM if you're interested
Also I would definitely keep the 501st crl in mind, since it was approved and on that document there are close up photos for all of the elements of the kit.

I would caution using another club's CRL for our approval process.

Thanks all --- I'll have to reconsider using sintra, then. I would definitely like to see an approved Jango or Boba with sintra plates... I'll hunt around for them. If you know of any, send a link my way!

I'm sure there have been plenty of MMCC Fett's with sintra plates out there.

You could dig around here:

https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?board=406.0

This guy is currently building an ESB Fett and has made his plates out of sintra (though he is still in the building process and isn't an approved Fett yet):
https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=209657.0

So definitely possible!

Re: WIP Kal Skirata Update
Some updates:

I've got gloves, boots, flack vest material, the flight suit and belt pouches.

Boots:

The zipper will be covered by the boot armor. I picked the thicker tread for these because Jango's boots have such thick tread.

Gloves:

Belt pouches:

Question on these; the CRL says there are 7 pouches, but only states where 6 of them go. Plus, I think it looks like he's got 8 total, just like Jango. Here's what the CRL says:
"3. Belt shall contain 7 Pouches
4. Pouches should be arranged as 4 on the right and 2 on the left with a space between the right and left sides for the placement of the Jango Fett style Westar Holster."
I'm not sure what to do about these --- the numbers don't match up.

Flight Suit:

I'm not sure if this is the right color or not - it might be too light. If so, I'll dye it. Obviously I'll rip out the pockets and add the undersleeves. Here's another picture of it in different lighting:

Here is the material for the flack vest:

Here's a test-fit pic - the flack vest and plates aren't mine, but I'll likely model mine off of them.

The sleeves need to be shortened.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Those plates are the right shape, but wrong size for your frame. You might want to scale yours 1/3 down.
Karen Travis stated Skirata's armor was essentially a gold/brown version of Jango's silver/blue armor. If you look at reference photos of Temuera Morrison in the Jango costume you'll see the bottom of the ab plate sits between his ribcage and belly button.

The girth belt and pouches go around the belly, and the gun rig around the waist at top of the codpiece.
This effectively lengthens your torso and gives visual balance to the overall armor design (makes you look taller).
Great build so far and I can't wait to see it come to fruition!
Bonus points if you happen to look like actor Ed Harris...

In regards to the pouches and what we have on the LFL images, I would just mount them straight across the front.

Plates are on the larger side, especially how tall the collar plate is. Trim the collar plate to make it smaller and bring the rest of the plates up and I think the sizing will look better.
