Starting Work on New Live Action Deathwatch
« on: Aug 20, 2022, 08:28 AM »
Hi,

I have been an approved Mandalorian Merc for a number of years and I decided to make a new Mandalorian kit that can be jointly approved by the 501st and MMC together. I decided to go with a Live Action Deathwatch as I love the colour scheme and I can get most of the soft parts in one order from Imperial Boots.

I have my order in with Imperial Boots and the following is on the way:

Belt:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DUPO2CY/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Holster and Belt Pouches:
https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/949733103/westar-35-death-watch-trooper-holster?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=westar+35++holster&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&organic_search_click=1&variation0=1780017973&variation1=1853042799

The armour will be 3D printed soon.

I have a question regarding the helmet - is the Black Series Deathwatch helmet approvable if I make the following changes?:

  • Fill in part of the turn signals so that they appear smaller and further apart, similar to:

(image borrowed from the Bounty Hunters Guild forum)

  • Add the small rectangular slot to the left cheek
  • Add the small discs to the lower two key slots on the back
  • Remove and fill in the two LED's on the top of the range finder
  • Replace the visor with a darker variant

I am willing to fill in the weathering that is molded into the dome is that required?

I am looking forward to working on this one and I would appreciate any tips that can be provided

Yes, filling in the built-in Boba damage on the helmet is required.

Thankyou for confirming Mi'ix, time to stock up on body filler!. Is there any issue with the button on the right earcup remaining or does that need to be removed as well?

Make sure it gets glued in so it doesn't stick out.

That's a pretty recognizable black series feature and a detail we don't see on the helmets in the references.

I have been working hard on modifying the Black Series Death Watch helmet and have made some progress. So far I have sanded away all of the original paint and the molded in "Boba" weathering, along with filling in a portion of the turn signals to make them appear smaller and further apart.  I have also 3D printed a replacement right ear cap and RF and added magnets for easy RF removal.

Hopefully I have the size and spacing for the turn signals correct - please let me know if they do not meet approval standard.

I can still slightly see the ghosting of the covered-up portions of the turn signals, I will probably give them another touch up with blade putty then sand and repaint that area.

Looks good.

One more pass to even out the area you filled in on the triangles should do it!

I was successfully able to smooth out the space between the modified turn signals, my paint also arrived allowing me to get the first layer down. Now to leave it a day or two to cure before masking and spraying the purple areas.

Do a burnt umber wash then a black wash over top to get the right shift on the shock blue.

After spending a few nights on weathering here is the result:

I have also 3D printed the little cylinders that sit in the bottom two keyhole slots

I have also been working in sanding and priming a Westar 35 to go along with my kit, a little more sanding anf it will be ready for paint:

Another pass with a black wash:

It is now starting to look like what is in the images from the show. Now if only my new visor would ship so that I can finish this off! My soft goods from Imperial Boots are on their way so once they arrive I can start working on sizing and printing the rest of the armour.
