That's an interesting technique. I think I would have been more likely to do that on the armor, rather than a [hopefully] well-maintained blaster. But it looks cool!

I'm going for a "worn but well lubed" look.  The dirt would stick to the grease/oil quite a bit.

That's what I tell myself anyway, lol

I know, I keep posting this dumb gun.

I just refinished it though.  I removed all the paint and used Birchwood Casey AlumaBlack.
It blackened the aluminum, steel, and most of the other mystery metals I used very well.
I love how the metal itself was blackened and not covered in a paint, it really gives it that "gun" look.
I brushed on wax melted with crayon and dirt and kept scrubbing and cleaning with a scotchbrite pad until I wore down a bit of the finish and got it mostly clean except for the deep recesses.  I then blasted it with a blowtorch again and some of the wax re-melted so it looks like a little gun oil leaking.

I feel that this type of finish fits a weapon better than the paint I was using before.  It has a worn blued steel look (to me, and hopefully others).  I wish I was a better photographer so you can see the different textures in the different areas.

It's been a lot of fun messing with this thing and learning as I've gone along.
