Steve's armor WIP; Redux
« on: Nov 07, 2022, 08:30 PM »
Hello! I've recently revived my WIP over on the Talon Clan forum here https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=197331.0 and I'm reevaluating my prior construction and shaping choices. I'm a bit smaller post-pandemic and after trying on my flak vest with chest armor tonight, I'm wondering if I don't need to move down to smaller plates.

The collar feels really wide, and the chest plates just hang off the side of my...chest. Do they just need some extra shaping or is this setup too wide?

Probably a little wide.  I'd argue for remaking them rather than cutting them down - the scaling may be thrown off now that you've changed size and shape.

I would cut them down on either side instead of making new plates. The length looks good, and making new, smaller overall plates would make them too short, IMO.

Good morning!

(small) progress made! Think I'll put my armor progress here for wider feedback going forward, and link over to here in my WIP thread with Talon Clan as I finish steps.

Over the last couple weeks, I utilized a planning day to get some work done. I decided to try trimming my current armor down to start; if it doesn't work, no biggie to cut more. I started by marking and cutting 1/4" off each side of the collar, chest and ab plates for 1/2" total width removed. Once I got the armor home to the shop and started sanding, I started getting concerned about the symmetry of my plates so I removed the velcro, flattened the pieces and taped them together. BIG differences  ??? so I trimmed the plates even and sanded my edges.

Also began brainstorming padding for my helmet. I'm used to a snug fit from wearing motorcycle helmets all these years, so that's where I'm starting. I'll make all the sections velcro'd in so I can remove them if it's too much.

Recycled padding from an old ATV/dirtbike helmet...

Will update with back templates soon!
