TPU Filament: Good to go?
« on: Mar 16, 2023, 04:36 PM »
So before I commit to materials to build what will be my sixth build (been retired for awhile) I'd like to know if TPU filament is acceptable to make armor.  It's a newer type of filament (well new to me at least) that is somewhat flexible but not "floppy".  I've got a couple of spools left over from a commission and thought since I have it why not use it?  I ask as it's not a type of material that I've seen anyone mention in the forums.

I'm not worried about print lines as I know how to remove them nor will I use it for making my bucket, I have two from my previous kits that I can repaint.  Thanks for any and all input.

I’d be concerned about the flex and painting. I suppose that car bumper primer and paints formulated for rubber props may work. Probably not the right material for a helmet.
Knees or shoulders and maybe gauntlets with a bit of give might be awesome. This sounds very cool and I think if you’re successful you’ll be pushing the envelope even further.
Please share your results.

I have seen a Halo cosplayer make a set of armor out of urethane rubber, semi rigid, looked hard, but could bend and flex.  That being said he was using molds, either pouring into or injection molding.  I don't have any experience printing with TPU because I have a good feeling that normal methods for smoothing prints I don't think work for flexible or semi flexible surfaces.  Paint may flake, spot putty my not stick or will crack.

I've thought about printing a neck seal out of TPU but I think that and other parts that are supposed to flex would be the only things I would use it on.
