WIP - Custom Modern Build (Loth Wolf)

Su'cuy! Pardon the image dump but I've got some catching up to do as I'm already well into this process.

I'm designing and building a custom post-Imperial kit centered around Lothal and Loth Wolf iconography. Part of this process includes learning how to 3D model so that I can tailor make my designs to meet my needs.

I began about a month and a half ago with the helmet, first learning rudimentary 3D modeling skills by blocking and finishing a "standard" Mandalorian helmet and then creating my custom design from the ground up.

Here's the design, rendered:

And here's the final painted version:

There's minor work to be done permanently affixing the visor and internal padding inside the helmet, but I'm thrilled with the end result!

Next, I've moved on to the shoulders- replicating and printing pauldrons in the style of Din Djarin. Gave them their second filler primer coat tonight, after which I'll touch them up and move on to color coat.

And finally, I've got in-progress designs for my gauntlets, pictured below. Production hasn't started on these, but I'm nearing what I feel to be a finalized version of the left gauntlet, after which I'll move onto the right.

Everything designed in Blender, and printed using PETG on an Ender-3. I welcome feedback, and I'm going to have a ton of questions about the soft parts. I have loose visuals in my mind that I'll need help refining and sourcing to complete the full vision.

Feedback welcome!

Thanks! It’s far from the original design, which will never see the light of day. Refining the “ear” pieces took some time, but I’m pleased with the end result.

Cool design! I would run your helmet design by the app team as it is a custom, just to make sure it's approvable.

I’ve contacted them :)

I’ve also been advised that the Modern CRLs might be more applicable to my overall kit, so we’ll see how the dice fall. I started researching legacy chestplates today.

A few minor updates!

Pauldrons are done, with the white base coat now on. I'm deciding whether or not I want to continue the grey primary with white accents, or invert that for the minor body pieces. What do you guys think?

I also made an adjustment to my left vambrace to integrate my Apple Watch as a display screen. Here's a test print making sure that it fits the scaled design.

The full design is printing now, so I'll have that to show soon. I began work on my right vambrace, but it's not ready to show yet. I'm designing it to have fur accents- I considered that a Mandalorian based on Lothal would likely be a bit more wild in nature. Planning to utilize fur, a shoulder cape/shawl and loincloth among my soft parts.

More soon!

Personally, I would stick with the consistent Grey with white accents. It maintains unity over the whole kit.

Be aware that a one piece post imp plate like Din's falls into an era where CRL's state a loincloth isn't allowed. Modern like Boba you're good

Agree with Tramp, the consistency would look better and make the kit look cohesive and flow

Yet. Key word there—Yet. The PI CRLs are being updated based upon Season 3 of The Mandalorian and based on any new reveals from Ahsoka. So while Loin Cloths are not yet allowed for Pi builds, they will likely be allowed after the updates come out. As such, I would hold off on the loin cloth, but don't necessarily discard it outright.

I need to update the title on the first post, I’m almost certain I’m now aiming for the modern era. I’ve modeled out a chest plate based on the Legacy design that I’m not 100% happy with yet, but it’s getting there.

Please don't speculate on possible CRLs. You should be working off of what the current CRLs say and what the app team tells you.

Cool to see that you're moving to legacy plates, try and post some design ideas so we can get a better understanding of things! would love to see a full mock up of your paint ideas. Also imo I think gray with white accents is good, and if you're ever needing inspiration look at some loth wolves and their coloration.

Here's all the components I've designed together in a single, very low quality render:

As far as colors, I'm working some tan into my overall scheme among the soft parts, but will continue to use the 2 grays and white that I've used for the bucket. Pulled those colors from a white Loth Wolf.

Mocked this for colors using MandoCreator earlier today:

Shoulders are painted. I'm not 100% on them, I may hand paint my darker grey on the crown to provide some additional variety.

I'm fighting with the gauntlet, so I sprayed it with a white base coat so that I could see any additional imperfections.

Looking for feedback on this one.

I'm nearing what I feel to be final design on the cuirass, but there's still something that feels "off" about it.

Do you agree, and if so, can you identify it so that I can tweak it to be more Mandalorian in design?

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:

I slept on it, came back this morning and made a few modifications that I feel like brought it home. I'm test printing the widest part for scale right now.

Okay. Updates for this weekend!

Chest is printing. I scaled, printed, tweaked, scaled again, printed, tweaked, updated my mockup file to be physically accurate to my scale, scaled again, and now I'm printing the full thing.

I also spent some time learning how to better render out scenes in Blender so that I can show off concepts with sunlight-accurate color. As such, have what I'm considering final design for the chest and belly plates:

This is a modified legacy style, a far cry from where I started with this design when I was referencing the only image that comes up when you Google "legacy Mandalorian armor" but I hope it will still fit that criteria.

I designed this part of the armor to intentionally thread an androgyneous line. Let me know if you think I succeeded!

More next weekend when I've got the chest plate assembled.
