Is this backpack acceptable for use in place of backplate/cape?

That is just a pic I got off the net but it the same as mine. I got it from a local surplus store for 10.00. The one I have looks as though it has been through the wringer.  Mine also has a harness that I could attach a jetpack to if I ever decided to. I will try and get a pic up of mine tommorrow.

Okay, one more question.. where do you put the straps? Under the corner of the collar?

That's why not too many folks use packs...the straps get complicated.  If they lay over the armor and the pack has a lot of weight on them they will push the plates around.

It's possible if you haven't created your vest yet you could make a vest with side closures and slots on the tops of the shoulders for the arm straps of the pack.  That way you'd put on the vest, then the pack, slide the straps under the front of the vest, then close up the sides of the vest.

Another alternative is to build a harness similar to the jetpack harness and rig the pack up to attach to that.

if that pack is equipped with the "Y" strap hooks, I'd use the those instead of the shoulder straps, but like Tag said, attaching it to your plates will possibly have ill effects. You could make some sort of loop and ring on your vest and attach it to those that way you can still use it and not have it actually mounted to your plates. just find some good spots up top, maybe use some shoulder blocks like Boba has but with swivel loops for the top.

I have already made my vest. I think I may be able to slide the straps under my shoulder bell flaps. I will do a test fit on it when I get home. If it doesn't work out I will make a cape.

I think the bag is a cool feature, so don't give up too quick on it.

It should work. Barring nothing crazy happens once I attach the plates to my vest.

Well, things went south quickly when I tried putting it on.  I felt like Tommy Boy (fat man in a little coat) in time it will work, but for now I made a cape. I will continue to work on it cause it will look cool.

Not sure where you are with this project but here is a suggestion that may help.  I would go and get a back plate, you can find them precut from several different sources.  Mount the pack, without the straps directly to the back plate.  Then mount the back plate to your vest.  This will give you the look of wearing a back pack, but not have to worry about the straps going over your armor or not fitting.

Hope this helps.
