ghilling a mando?
« on: May 19, 2010, 03:33 PM »
Hey everybody,

My name is Chase and I'm pretty new here and just starting my new mando costume. I'm going for a half sniper half ninja look and thought it would be neat to ghillie my back plate and possibly my shoulders. Has anybody seen this on a mando or heard of it?

Please Reply,
Chase K.

Welcome Chase. A few have talked of it in the past. However, it's been generally discouraged as covering, even portions, of the armor with a ghillie suit takes away from the Mando look and ends up looking like something not even Star Wars related.

Yeah I understand not wanting a walking bush with a helmet. I was wanting a small backplate cover that wouldn't be to big because I was wanting a ninja feel to.
I also thought of possible doing a hood that could cover the helmet if needed.

I would think a half cape or even a short, full cape made out of the ghillie materials would look interesting. Covering much more than that, though...probably takes too much away from the "classic" Mando look. I have no idea what would correlate a ghillie style with a ninja style, but sounds to me like the two are separate ideas. Most costumes I've seen people try to make "ninja-y" wind up looking quite cartoonish, though. The ghillie part does intrigue me.

We're doing my son's new gear in a sniper style (if he ever gets off his butt to help with it...otherwise he gets nuthin :P ). Alll his parts will be classic Mando style with the exceptions of the helmet back and the half-cape (which I may look into the ghillie material for instead of the faded camo parts we had planed to use for that). Be interesting to see what you come up with.

I agree with Bedlam that a cape covered in the ghillie stuff would look cool. Maybe on parts of your gaunts too, because if you're  "sniping" the stuff on your gaunts will break up your face a little. And ninja mando is a bad idea in general. They're totally opposite. Ninjas are supposed to be light, very quick on their feet, and very agile. When you are loaded down with armor you are none of those things.

One thing to consider with Snipers is it really doesnt matter what they look like. For example, look at Kal Falco here at the club. His Mando is a sniper/comm specialist. His colors are literally flames... red, yellow, orange, white etc. Why would a sniper wear such garrish armor? Because it doesn't matter. In the real world, a trained sniper can hit the mark at a mile away. A mile away laying in a bush you could be wearing neon pink and no one would see you. With the tech in Star Wars, I'm sure a sniper could it a target from at least double that distance... if not more. Now, an assassin would likely make a ranged kill from much closer and colors to blend with the enviroment would be much more an issue.

Lifeburn and Bedlam have a point... a ninja inspired Mando is a poor idea. We've had a couple guys recently bring that idea and it's stirred up a whirlwind of problems.

Hrm. I have to agree that a ghillie suit would seem kind of impractical from a mandalorian perspective, though, as Bedlam mentioned, maybe a half-cape of ghillie net wouldn't hurt. Honestly, with the technology in star wars, the colors of mando armor really wouldn't do much to affect 'stealth'. With all of the alternate vision systems available (infrared, ultraviolet, Boba's ground penetrating radar), color seems to matter less than theoretical technological countermeasures.

Going with the poncho idea, Beviin Varhyc created a fairly awesome poncho a while back, one that could be folded back to act as a cape, or around the body to more or less conceal the armor. I believe he had it set up so that even when folded around the front, it left an opening at the right arm so he could still wield his rifle.

Thanks for the replies,

When I said I wanted to do a sniper ninja cross I meant that it would be a ninja in using hand to hand combat  but incorporating camoflauge in it. I also understand that ninjas and mandos don't mix but I wanted to be stealthy like both a ninja and a sniper.
I know it's kind of confusing but I want a stealth warrior. Able to sneak around undetected. So I would like to get the best of both the ninja and the sniper. I have to find a balance inbetween the quiet movements of a ninja and the camo of the sniper.

My guys is a Scout that specializes in stealth so i understand the stealth warrior thing. In the Star Wars universe though to be stealthy all you have to do is have the right equipment. You could just do camo plates on your armor or do a mix of camo and black ( going back to ninja) and  perfectly fit with your idea of a stealth warrior sniper.

Here's my two sense- now remember that I always approach mando design from the direction of making it look like it belongs in the star wars universe, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt.

I think it would be very interesting to have a covert sniper-esque mando with a camo wrap/ cover thing.  Now, for this to be Star Wars-y in nature you should absolutely not use current type camo netting or a traditional current style ghillie wrap.  You should do a cloak type shroud or poncho like what we see luke wearing.  In the Star Wars universe there's never this type of fuzzy camo net ghillie suit.  The camo was custom dyed/ painted onto a fabric cloak/ cowl/ duster/ etc.  In my opinion you should never use something that is readily identifiable to today's world.  Star Wars had a sort of low tech-high tech WW2 feel to it.

Again, this is just my opinion, and I'm pretty crazy in how I stay grounded to the movie universe, so you don't have to pay too much mind to me. ;)

Since we are Mandos perhaps we should LET the enemy see us. Then they might have a chance....
