Early mandal. Conqueror Armour (Concepts first)
« on: Jul 29, 2010, 07:49 AM »
So, everyone... I'm the new guy and I'm planning to do a Beskar'gam.  :)
Thinking about how my favourite armour would look like, I remembered that awesome mask of mandalore the ultimate.

I was pretty sure that was the essence of what I wanted my face turning into when I strapped the Beskar'gam on. Since the Merc's standards only allows masks in the Early Era (althoug the Mandalore of the Neo Crusader actually wears one), it became pretty clear these Era-Standerds were the ones I would be geared to. Fine with me, for I like the Mandalorians of this era most, for they are conquerors and fighgt for nobody but Mandalore himself. That's pretty much cooler than to be pawn of a Sith or that Mercenary - Bounty Hunter thing, although I might be influenced by good old Canderous in that point.

So I imagined a Mandalorian in the jungles of Dxun, hunting and using any material available to craft his armour. Since I love doing martial arts, I had a light armour in mind, so I would be able to do some cool moves while wearing it and to give melee weapons more of a purpose. So elements of Barbarians, Rangers and Gladiators found their way into my mind and that's where they all mixed up to my very personal Beskar'gam.

This drawing originally had only the purpose of designing an alternated mask, but it turned out, I was not able to stop because I was eager to see what it would look like in combination with the other parts of the armour I had in mind, so it became kind of a Fanart...

Yep, that's actually pelt around the neck. I thought it was giving it a wild look.
And ever since I played a game which should be very familiar to Lanna, I thought pelt around the neck was a pretty cool thing.  ;)

You'll come to see the rest of the design soon...

Good start! Could you please add your WIP-thread to our clan's collection? It helps to keep the overview over everybody's progress and it will be good inspiration once it is complete.

From what I can see on the sketch, a perfect start. With the head turning, the only thing you'd need to watch for and test is the hose/tube length. I'd just hook it all up, do a test fit, and then trim/achor the hose however, that way you know you'll have the full range of motion you want.

I love the look of the older kits, so good luck!

I'm still thinking abou the position of the breathingdevice the tubes end into. I have a few ideas but no matter where I will pllace them, I will make the tubes extra long. Hopefully I find some flexible material for that, stiff tubes would made the suit uncomfortable for sure...

Picture Server is temporary down. More Sketches when I can use it again.

I'm planning to use fiberglas, since I learned how to use it on youtube. I just hope I can find what I need for it in germany... Have to check out markets.

I think you can find all you need in Germany, too, you just gotta find the local companies name. Klyn Vodder did some god fiberglassing on his scratch build helmet, so he can probably answer such questions, just PM him.

Last hotel we booked on the way back from FedCon had a SPLENDID silver all-rubber tube. I had to fight down an asault of Jawa-instincts and I didn't see it in OBI or other home depots since then, but it exists around here and you can probably dig it up in a shop for professional plumbers. I could have used some for my Jango's rain gear-project but Aldi had some for a nice price and it won't be visible, so I decided to go with the metal-strengthened standard tubing.

Tell me when you start looking for a visor, I can include one of the specific Y-shape you need in the next package that goes out to Lanna. Details here

He's sorting at work to find more, but if/when he can find it, since it would be free to him, i'd be willing to send it to you just for cost of shipping, or give youe the name/measurements of it and some pictures so you can source it on your side of the pond to. It was a rather fliexible, medium thick walled, bright black tubing that seemed to love to take paint and hold it on!

:o Wow, you guys are great! I never met such a willing to help community before.
Guess you have some left-over-material for this, Tomoe? I would appreciate the Visor, so I would be able to adapt the mask the way it will just fit right in. You can send it to Lanna, she wants to visit me on last August Weekend, I think...
Of course, Ijaat,  the tubes would be welcome, too.  :P

I made a paperdummy of the most important softpart of this Beskar'gam today. Actually, it's just half paper, because it's based on a part of my Rebel-Pilot suit.

I will duplicate the back of this with leather, but will prolong it in height, so it may cover my back up to the neck (marked by the horizonal paper strip). I plan to fit some scabbards an holsters there for my arsenal.  ;)
Instead of the frontpeace there will be those straps, crossing in that ring in the middle. Belt-buckles on the sides will make it fitting and resiliant so it may stay in place when I carry weapons on my back.
I ordered some wild leather today. Can't wait to craft this thing as soon as the package arrives.  ;D
Just the size I need it:

Yes, that's the idea basically. If you have the base model of the mask to take the exact dimensions of the visor by then, I can certainly complete and send that before I go on holiday for two weeks (Aug. 24 would be last call, if not, it's wait for two weeks - no catastrophy either)

I can see how this piece can be used to carry even the bulky plates of the early era comfortably. Slip it over your head, velcro the sides closed and you're good.

Did you get to do a full-body design scetch already? It would help me to put the details you present into context and check with reference materials and CRL to avoid surprises. I've never been in Early Era before, but we can go there for sure. It's a great addition to the range of costumes in our clan and certainly worth the effort!

Another suggestion when going into plate details and fixing: stuff will be heavy, you're going to sweat in it no doubt. Figure out a way how to detach plates and fabric parts for easy laundry. Sure there is hand laundry and Febreeze, but it feels good just to drop the stuff into machine when you're coming home from a troop.

No full body sketch yet (busy times), but at least I can show you my plan for the body armor. I plan to fix it it with straps, but I didn't decide where to fix those straps yet   Maybe I can connect it to the "x-west", or maybe I'll wear another strap around my torso to attach it there, or maybe I will have "Hosenträger" from the breastplate to the backside of the girdle... which maybe would look goofy, I guess.  :P
Anyway,here's the sketch:
It is 1 plate for the breast and 3 for the stomach. The red lines are "behind" they show the upper ends of the stomach-plates and the straps whom hold them together. I got the the idea when I did my research and found those roman legionaire armors:
Topic change to the visor: I want to make the hard parts in fiberglass, and since my new appartment will have a balcony, it's for the best wait until I will move there in september to make it my fiberglas-forge ;) Until then, there will only be soft parts for me to craft and some shopping-tours to find the basic equipment (like a brathing mask, goggles, liquid polyester and the fiberglas itself)
So I guess I will wait for the visor question until after your vacation  :D
Even for the clay basement of the mask I plan to have a plastic-head for help. But making the clay-mask before the move, risks I will accidently break it before using it for the fiberglas process. So I'd rather wait that tiny single month...
