9118 Heavy Carbine
« on: Jul 29, 2010, 01:37 PM »
I just began work on my 9118 Heavy Carbine. I'm modding a Red Ryder BB gun for this purpose.

You can see the 9118 here.

For those of you that have never seen A Christmas Story I got a picture below.

It's better that I make my own, seeing as buying a new one costs 990 credits  :P

So far, I've hacked off the barrell about a quarter of the way down (maybe half, I'm not quite sure). Then I sanded off all the finish from the wood and painted it silver. Just last night, I picked up some 2in PVC and used caulking to hold it in place while I start to work the bondo to create a cohesive and smooth surface for the unattractive gap between the Red Ryder and PVC that now covers the barrel.

More to come.

UPDATE

So thus far it hasn't ended up quite like I thought it would. But I think this way is far more... entertaining.

Very nice!  Kinda like the wooden stock but understandable that you gotta cover it up since it does have the Red Ryder logo on it.

The more I look at this rifle... the more I feel as if it needs something.
I can't quite put my finger on it.

Perhaps the main portion of the barrel looks far to plain.
Any ideas?

It needs a large bad shebs scope for one, maybe some little greeblies, an LED or two.

Ok, this may sound like a really DUMB question....

What are greeblies?

I've heard the term before, and I think it specifically refers to something like 'little odds and ends' that add character to whatever one is working on. But that's just SO VAGUE.

Your right on the definition. Its actually meant to be that vague because its anything u can think of.  Old pieces of vacuum cleaner, old circuit boards from computers, cell phone parts, anything to give the weapon more "definition" so its not plain looking.

Besides a large scope on top of the gun, I would suggest putting something on the side to act as a "magazine" or "power source" for the gun,  Maybe adding in some more color to it, like some rough silver patches will help.

slightly off thos particular thread but along the same vein, what do y'all think of recreating the pulse blaster from Critters?

I have not seen it in over 10 yrs but I think it could be done on a toy MAC-10 frame from an airsoft. I love the red ryder var here it reminds me of the Mares leg 30-30 that was in an old western TV show ages ago.

I don't know why all of you are focusing on the gun. Rdbahr is obviously trying to show off my chair and garage wall. Way to miss the point of the post haha!  :P

Wiper blades!!!!!

That's genius!
I was trying to cut up some sintra for such a purpose, but I couldn't seem to get the pieces thin enough.

Oh and James....
Shut your face.  ;D

Yeah wiper blades were used in the original trilogy to add ribs to the stormtrooper's E-11 barrels (I think...).

Alright, I've been working on trying to figure out some other things to do to this piece, and I may have actually figured something out. Let me know what you all think.

New mods:
Ribbed barrel to make it look more swarzy.
Old school iron circular sight.
Adding glazing puddy (the redish stuff) to even out the feel of the handle and take care of those little irritating imperfections.
Adding caulking for seamlessness (sort of) between the barrel and joining parts.

Nice addition there with the ribbing.   Just looks like you are missing the rear portion of the iron sights there.  Are you going scopeless on this blaster then?

Yeah, I'm going sightless. This is more of a heavy blaster, rather than a standard one.
