    After some deliberation I decided for my first kit to be Late Crusader Era. I’ve not yet found anyone that’s made the “+” (cross) visor on their buy’ce so I want to run with that. I am seeking advise from other helm builders as I proceed.
    These are the pics I am basing my buy’ce on:





    I have a Hasbro Boba Fett helm but it is way too small for my head. So, I cut the top out of an XL baseball batters helmet for the dome of the buy’ce. I am still planning on using the Boba Fett cheeks and back of the helm.
    Here is a mock up of my initial plan:



    Before I start the fiberglass and bondo I would like to know what you think…

DARN YOU! You beat me to it! I Love that helmet and plan to make a similar one for my next kit. My only suggestion is if you want it like the original art the vertical bar is shorter than the horizontal bar. Your vertical and horizontal bars seem to be of equal length. But if that's what your going for than yeah, I think it's fine, move on to the next step. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

    Thanks for the input, Seugtai. I love your fem-mando early crusader.

    For my helm, I have several "potential" sizes for the cross (and I do agree with shortening the vertical bar). As work continues I will post more and see which cross fits best.

I would suggest altering the cheeks more. While there are some modern era aspects to some crusader era helmets, none are quite so vividly similar as the cheeks and cheekbones of yours there.

Yup, Id agree with what Slade said. We honestly don't even want to see Modern Era helmets used as a base but, if you can disguise it so we see no Modern Era look to it at all, it can be used as a foundation to build from.

The pics you chose show angular "cheekbones", so you may want to crisp those up. The helmet also seems to sit closer to the head in the comics, so a Modern-era base may not work.

    I appreciate all the recommendations. That is what I was hoping for.
    Looking through the KOTOR references I was thinking of adding a hose & “air filter” to the cheek plates and changing the shape of the cheeks to “crisp them up” similar to Rohlan’s in the pictures below:

You could use the demegal helmet from froge props as a base would work realy well I think.

I thought of that earlier, it may work, as long as you prep the surfaces properly and take your time. . .

You don't have to fully scratchbuild if that's the route you chose. Simply cut out the cheeks of what you have and redo them, then lose the modern keyslots on the back and put in something custom.

    Actually the Demagol helm would make things a lot more straight forward and I could save the items I have now for a future helm. I know from previous costumes (in another society) that you can never have enough helms =)
    And I really do appreciate all the constructive criticism. It makes for a better start and a better chance at getting my first helm approved.
    Now to figure out how to place an order ...

First off, "YEAH MORE AZ MERCS!!"

Secondly, I believe you are making your visor too big. The last image is probably the best method of how it should be. I have extra slits in my helmet like a many mercs, but its not a lot. Its more of a superficial mod, not a real major design.

As for the base, some extra sintra should be able to get that sharp cheek area. As for that I believe you can do it. Plus I'm out in Mesa, so give me a shout if you need any help.
