Custom Flight Suit Question
« on: Aug 24, 2012, 11:27 AM »
Hey all, I'm slowly but surely working on my first kit and have a flight suit problem. I've been to all the thrift stores and military supply shops in my area and I cannot find a flight suit. I know I can order them online however Id like to try it on before purchase to make sure it fits well and isn't too heavy a material. I am rather thin, only about 135-140lbs and about 5'9" tall. I found some BDUs but they are all very baggy and not the right color.

I am considering having a custom suit sewn by my mother who is a seamstress. What material should I look into purchasing? Also is a custom made suit allowed for official status?

Thanks
-Andrew

From what I've seen (AND PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!) a custom suit should be fine. You could even use Dickies coveralls, scrubs, pretty much anything that looks good and isn't a T-shirt and Jeans. Basically, it has to look like one piece, and not something that was thrown together. Although flight suits are the most accurate, I can certainly understand not wanting to trust the internet with your sizing, and you really don't have to limit yourself with  a flight suit. Hope that helps  :D

Sirus you are correct as far as I know.

Koda, I would say go ahead and have the suit custom made for you. The reason I say this is that way you can be sure to get a fit that is not to baggy and looks good on your frame.

Custom is fine. If you're going down that route then you want a heavy work material such as the Dikies, something that'll take a bit of knocking about.

Great thanks so much for all the help! Any suggestions as to what material is recommended?
