Early Era Crusader
« on: Sep 20, 2012, 02:34 AM »
So I don't know when to stop apparently. Now that my other one is almost done, I've started getting ideas for doing an early era mando. And don't panic! I will finish my legacy kit! Just wanted to post this up and start getting some feedback/tips/brainstorming help if at all possible lol.

Here's a sketch of the armor:

And the helmet (for now at least lol) :

I've got some spare hoses around left over from my dad's old CPAP mask thing. They seem pretty bendy (well, sorta). I'll give 'em a shot. In any event, thoughts?

Also, on another note entirely, I'm considering a forum name change. Alta is actually the name of the character for my legacy armor. Now that I'm thinking of doing another, I'm worried things might start getting confusing. Yall think a forum name change is in order? Just curious to see what yall think or to find out if I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill lol.

In any event, feedback is appreciated!

Looks good! I look forward to seeing what you do with it. I've got ideas for a crusader myself, though it will probably be some time before I finish some of the other projects I am working on and get a chance to put it in to motion.
In regards to changing your forum name, I'd say don't, it will probably be more confusing if you do, and you can always put the name of your crusader character in your sig or elsewhere on your profile.

On the CPAP hoses the only worry I would have is how well they are going to hold paint. Not sure if the plastic they are made of will or not, but as far as flexibility and what not they should be good to go. For testing those out I'd go get some of the Krylon Fusion spray paint (since it's made to go on plastic it probably has the best chance of holding on the hose) and then paint a foot section or so. Give it a couple days to fully dry then start playing with the hose to see if the paint starts to chip off. If it does I believe the hoses Seugtai use were old gasmask hoses and were not very expensive at all.

On the forum name change thats all up to you. Honestly you could call yourself littlemisstuffet  for all anyone should care. Your character's name only matters when you go to App in, but that doesn't have to be anything close to your Forum name... and shouldn't if you deside to go with littlemisstuffet  :P.

The only question I have is what do you plan on the chest armor being under the leather straps that connect to your your collar fur?

Have a good one,
Hagen

Many thanks for the feedback! And I hear ya on that end lol. This one is going to be very slow in the works as I have to recovery from making the legacy set before I can do all that much. I do, however, have some parts to start working on the helmet and a few other plates still laying around the house, so I may do that but, once I'm out of supplies, it's going on hold till I can get more funds.

And thank you for the feedback as well! I'm not sure how well the CPAP hose will hold paint either, but their base color is gray so, maybe that will help? I'll definitely try the Krylon fusion spray paint (love that stuff lol). I was also considering that, since they're gray, some light sanding and some weathering with rub 'n buff might be enough. Thoughts? I'm thinking the wax based paint may hold to it better but I may be wrong in thinking that.

The chest armor will either be fake leather or will be a solid one piece chest plate designed to look like bone. I don't have access to large quantities of real leather in my home town, and even the little stuff is ridiculously over priced. Plus, I've never worked with real leather. Not sure I'd even know what to do with it if I had it lol.

We have some upholstery stuff though so I was thinking either try and fake the look or go with the bone plate. Still not sure which idea is better...Thoughts?

And as far as the forum name change goes, I guess I'll just keep it the way it is then lol. Seems like I'll just make things worse if I change it XD No worries though! I like the one I have!  ;D

And now to post the fur options (lol) :

(Option A)

(Option B)

(Option C)

(Option D)

(Option E)

(Option F)

I'm wanting to use more then one (for now at least) and I'm wanting to use one of the more fluffy (lol) one's for the neck piece. I like the idea of using either the fake wolf like one (A) or the gray one with the lighter gray tips (F). C is probably too fancy for a kit but it was so soft I couldn't help but take a picture lol (it looks pretty realistic too lol).

In any event, what do yall think about the fur choices?

[EDIT: The pic I had for Option A was actually the wrong wolf fur. There were two at the store, one that was ratty (the one I originally posted) and one that looked much better (the one that's up there now). Sorry for the confusion ^^;  ]

Rubber SUCKS at holding paint.  That's unilaterally between just about all kinds of rubber unfortunately.  Most colored rubber has dye/pigment added to it before the extrusion process.

For the furs, I'd go with b and d, that way you have one that is lighter and one that is a bit darker, but they are still similar colours so will look good together.

Ah, didn't know about all that. Hmm...Well, I still have plenty of spare supplies that I don't know if I'll be using again so I'll go ahead and see what I can do with it. If it decides to be all stubborn then I'll get those hoses like Seugtai got and just use those lol.

Didn't know C would be very well received, I was worried it'd be too "pretty" a fur to use lol, but I can't deny how realistic it looks. I'll look into trying to sneak it in then. I still have to make up my mind which ones should go where.

Im so excited for this.

Lol, well let's just hope I can pull it off! XD

Hmm, ya that's a good idea too. Gah, too many choices! XD At least I have plenty of time to figure it out. The darn things are so expensive though, 30$ a yard! O_o I have no idea why they cost THAT much but, meh, I guess it can't be helped.

I'll do my best to try and rig up a color scheme for the sketch and then try and insert some different clips to do a mock up of how it might look. Look forward to photo-spam!

Also, what do yall think of the helmet? How's that look to yall? I've never really designed one before so I'm a bit worried about it.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I should have some more pics up tonight of different colors and the like. Also, weapons sketch, that'll be coming soon, so stay tuned!

I think the helmet looks good, though as always with this sort of thing it will come down how it is transfered from 2d to 3d shape. But I've got no reason to believe that you won't do it justice.

Love the concept. The only question that comes to mind is how awkward is it going to be to turn your head with the large diameter hose plugged into the back of the bucket? Seems like it would cause the helmet to want to stay put when you tried to look left or right.

Ya, that's why it's been so hard to design one lol. Taking that, plus transport and what not into consideration, it's been very hard to come up with something. I tried to make it look somewhat unique, I didn't want to copy Seugtai (not that I could even if I wanted to cuz her skills are way more awesome than mine lol  ;D ) but was having trouble coming up with something that I felt wouldn't break to pieces if placed in a box for transport.

Many thanks for the vote of confidence though! I will certainly do my best!  ;D

Well, Seugtai seems to manage, so I think I'll be OK. I got a chance to look at her helmet a bit and the hoses she used were very flexible. I'll definitely make sure to PM her a lot during helmet construction for advice though lol. I may have to redo the back pack thingy what not when time rolls around, depending on which hose I end up using, but we'll see lol.

Can't do anything simple can ya  :D.    Your sketches look really cool and that helmet will be awesome.
I'm gonna throw my support for fur D and B. Two colors will give it some depth.

Definetely talk to Seugtai. She's super supportive and really clever. And if it looks bad she'll tell you right away and come up with 5 ways to fix it. Her Crusader WIP should really be stickied.

Good luck!

Lol, GO BIG OR GO HOME!  :P

Many thanks for the feedback! And I will definitely be chatting up Seugtai! She's super awesome and her build is absolutely amazing and yes, her build should so be stickied!

Also, little note for anyone who hasn't noticed, I accidently posted the wrong fur option for option A the wolf like fur. I went back and changed it so the right one's up there now. Not sure if that will change anyone's mind but, I wanted to let yall know. Weapon sketch and it's ref pic will be up later tonight. Stay tuned! :D
