1st. velcro ;)

2nd.   love that gaunt vod ;D

That gaunt display looks wicked man!

Thanks Vode!! ;D

And got a small update...
Wiring and primer!!

Got the wiring on the Targeting gaunt done:

Since no one locally carries 3xAAA inline battery holders  I had to custom make one...  :P
It was made from a RadioShack 2-AAA battery holder like this:

I just used my Dremel to cut the "bridge" end off, then split it in 2 down the middle, then I made the middle retainer from a scrap piece of the page guards I used to bridge the seam in my bucket together and shaped it with my heat gun to the same shape as the edge of the battery holder halves, cut it down to fit and glued it into place with E6000. The LED's are from a broken lightsaber left from my stepdaughter's Jedi training birthday party we threw a few years back and was pre-wired in parallel, just had to wire the battery leads and switch into place! ;)

And the gaunts after the first coat of primer:

That's it for now!  ;D

Thanks Ner'vode!

I put a couple updates on my FB page for Jaa'det

So without further ado.... UPDATES!! ;D

After allowing the first coat of primer to dry well I wet sanded and added a second coat of primer then a coat of silver (using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Aluminum spray paint:

The next step was toothpaste masking applied for the weathering and the base color coats, the flamer gaunt follows the color scheme of the rest of my kit so it is based in Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Semi-Gloss Black and  the targeting gaunt I chose to go with red for a few reasons,
a. Wanted it to look a bit "kit bashed" as if the gaunt was from a fallen comrade's kit and the color was kept as a memory to them
b. a nod to the Fett man's color scheme (gotta pay homage somehow ;))

and masking removed:

After a good wipe down with alcohol to remove any residual toothpaste from the masking I taped off the gaunts for the second color...
- The Targeting gaunt I left the side rails and connector of the keypad masked and used toothpaste to mask off the keys and painted the background flat black, I also removed the lens from the scope primed and painted it gold
- The Flamer is getting the orange stripe scheme that will be carried through to the rest of my kit and is on my bucket

After paint with taping removed:

and after removing the toothpaste masking and a wet sand with 220 and 400 grit on the flamer gaunt:

more detailed shots of both gaunts:

I still have the black/brown wash to go and may go back with one more coat of orange to fix the cracked finish on the flamer gaunt after a good smoothing out but I actually kind of dig the way it came out!?!  :-\

Opinions? Comments? Suggestions?  ???

Bring 'em on! :P

Appreciate the comments Ner'Vode!

So I decided to keep the cracked orange  ;D and add some additional weathering with 60 grit sandpaper to add the fine scratches then the black/brown wash last night and here is the result:

Targeting gaunt:

Flamer gaunt:

All that's left is:
- One more run of fine scratches on the gaunts
- Clear coat both gaunts
- Make retaining clip for the targeting display bezel (Partially done)
- Mount the reticle display image to the gaunt and lenses to the bezel
- Mount LED's into place on the targeting display
- Mount and wire switch/LED's on flamer gaunt
- Mount all hardware on the flamer gaunt
- Add Velcro tabs for closures and pad/line both gaunts

These should be done soon (as well as another piece you may have seen plates for in the other recent pics ;))

Stay tuned!

Thanks Vode, I liked the effect myself! ;)

However that was short lived when I added the clearcoat  ???
for some reason the clear coat reacted with the semi-gloss black and it cracked as well :o... This time it wasn't recoverable :'(

So I masked off the crackled orange spots, wet sanded with 220 and 600 grit sandpapers, wiped doewn with alcohol, redid the toothpaste masking and went over it with a coat of flat black paint I had...
... so far so good, paint is dry and no reactions! ;D

However, on better news the flamer gaunt is finished!
The reticle image has been glued down to the gaunt, the LED's mounted from below and the scope bezel reassembled (lenses) and mounted...
I ran into an issue with the shade layer not wanting to stay glued down :P so I used a couple pieces of leather lace to hold the shade lens in place which actually work out better because there was a small gap under the edge that let the light bleed from under the bezel which they eliminated!

and here it is!

You may have also noticed some extra plates in a couple of the previous posts and wondered what they were???
Well, early on I was told that the 'Grab-it Pack' I was planning on using looked to earthy or recognizable
So I decided what better way to make it more "Swarzy"?? Armour plate it!!! ;D

Original:

Plated:

So Whaddayathink?? ;D

Thanks Vode!

I see a zipper pull...:)
And Corey... :P
I gotta hide my twinkies somewhere! and no zipper pull would make it very difficult to get to them!! ;D

Well I was able to successfully fix the finish on the flamer gaunt and re-clear it with no crazing this time! ;D
So I started adding the electronics now, first thing was to remove the masking and mount the LED's and switch pod with some E6000:

All parts are pre-weathered and cleared with satin clearcoat, prior to starting the painting process on the gaunt I masked the area where the switch/LED pod was to be mounted so I had a clean surface to bond to (bonding to paint NEVER goes well for me!)

Next, for the LED's I drilled a hole from under the shield at the back of the gaunt and routed the leads for the LED's and the switch through to the inside of the gaunt.
Then I gutted a little flashing LED reflector my kids picked up at a fair (and broke :P) to use to activate the LED's
I de-soldered the LED's and the switch from the board and wired it to the leads for the switch and LED's:

Then I used the same double AAA battery holder from Radio shack for the power source, split it and mounted it with E6000 as I did on the targeting gaunt:

I also did some weathering on the other metal greebs...
Here is the copper strap to hold the flamethrower nozzle after being degreased in salt water:
**OOOO, SHINY**

And then after salt/venegar soak and taking a torch to it! (This was fun!! ;D)

Then after the protective satin clear coat:

And the dart emitters after black/brown wash and satin clear coat:

I'll get some more pics of the assembled gaunt tonight as well as a video of the operation of the LED's!  ;)

Much appreciated! I'm just wanting to make this kit the best it can be... on a super tight budget! :P

AAAAAND More updates!!

Well I got my flamer gaunt completed last night! ;D

Check it out...

and some detail pics...
- Activation pod

- Dart emitters

- Outside/Distribution block

- Flamethrower

And, as promised, a quick vid with an overview of the gaunt and showing off the lighting! ;D

So is this passable?? Think I'm definitely going to have to be adding some plates to the gloves (For protection from the flamethrower ya know!)

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I wish I could apply my detail to sewing into making the fun stuff. It seems to allude me when it comes to adding SW details to my armor. You have inspired me to remake my gaunts. They are bulky, boring and need a revitalization. What is the base material?

Keep it up! Love the paint job too!
