Special Effects Make-up Tutorials
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 09:50 PM »
Greetings!

One of my passions is doing special effects make-up. I had the wonderful job of working with all kinds of effects make-up in my previous job. However I have moved onto a much better job, but not in the FX make-up field. Now I'm starting up a series of tutorials I'll be posting to a new blog. This will keep my skills up and let me continue to try new techniques.

I am curious if anyone would be interested in me posting my tutorials here? Also, if there is anyone who has a request for a certain type of FX make-up, then ask me! I'd be glad to take requests and help out fellow costumers. Below are just a few examples of the type of work I do.

Some claw marks across the face.

Zombie Hands!

Mass Effect reaper circuits under torn skin.

Steampunk FX makeup.

Road rash.

Chemical burn.

Metal connection port under the skin.

Cuts and bruising on arm.

I think you get the idea by now that I'm not much on the beauty make-up, hehe.

Let me know if you want me to lay out step by step instructions on any kind of look. As long as you provide some reference pictures I can probably replicate it.

Cheers,
Calli

I love seeing how these effects are done! Especially since I'm well into the HvZ scene! Any tutorials you offer could be quite helpful :D

Well I went out and picked up a few more make-up supplies I was low on. I'm just in the middle of packing up my life and moving to another city however. Once I'm all moved at the end of the month I'll be starting up my tutorials. The first one is going to be on basic cuts and bruises since they are easy to do and can really add to a costume. Plus I get a lot of requests for them. Nothing like a mando with a black eye who's just staggered out of a friendly bar brawl eh?

Look for posts here starting in March!

Wow, looks great! I was wondering if you could do a broken nose type thing. I want to have just a little extra something to add to my look if I take off the helmet. I look like you might imagine Anakin would if he had led a more normal life. Cool, but not particularly mando.

ARISE, Necro-thread!

How difficult would it be to do facial scars that would stand up to taking my helmet on and off?

Yep. Rigid Collodion is extremely easy to use for those little scars and such. I always keep a bottle or two of it in my make-up kit (my wife finds it funny that my make-up kit is about 5 times the size of hers...full size tackle box  :P ). Only thing to really remember with it is not to apply it to the same place two days in a row. Let the skin "heal up" some to avoid chemical burns.

Liquid latex (I prefer RD407, myself), adhesives (my preference is Beta Bond), and a variety of other things like 3d effects gel and coagulated blood are always in my kit. Be sure to get a good remover for any of the stuff (my preference is Telesis Supersolve...great for removing make-up, too  :)  ).

Life decided to throw me lots of hurdles and curve balls with an added dash of chaos. That aside I finally have time to get back into my make-up. I'll be posting the tutorials over on my blog. The first one up is cuts and gashes!

Our newest member to our clan, Jag, and I went out to a local geek fair yesterday in our mando kits. As we knew it was going to be a smaller, cramped location, wearing our buckets inside was not ideal. Since we wouldn't be wearing our buckets much, we figured we would give our own faces a bit of added "character" to match our kits.

The duo braving the con floor:

A better shot of Jag's healed scars from some beast hunt long ago:

And a bad selfie of my "fresher" scar:

We had an absolute blast going around in kit with the make-up. People really enjoyed it and asked almost as many questions about the make-up as they did about our kits. It was a fun way to appear more in character even with our buckets off.

Cheers,
Calli

Those scars are seriously to-notch work, vod :D
I agree with the bucketless "character." I've rocked face paint and scars back before I had my own bucket. It really helps bring the character out.

Leroy, please refrain from necroposting. For a thread this old, it would be better to PM the thread creator and inquire.

As for tutorials, they posted about one on the first page of the thread:
