Early Crusader Build (Finished page 7!!)
« on: Feb 25, 2013, 05:30 PM »
I'm jumping on the early crusader bandwagon....because they are awesome. My design is pretty straightforward, nothing too crazy.

So as you can see my color scheme is brown....and brown....off white bone color....and more brown. My main, and possibly only, weapon is an axe. All the armor will be made out of sintra, with the spikes and stuff sculpted on with epoxy putty. I think the gauntlets I had in the 1st two designs looked too much like fantasy so I changed them to straighter plates with spikes on them. And I think my axe will look more like the first design instead of the one in color.

So anyways, just showing concept drawings would be no fun so here is what I have done so far. I found a roman style pepakura helmet and modded it to look the way I wanted, then did the usual fiberglass/bondo/sanding to get it mostly smooth. I didn't make it fully smooth so when I do the weather later the paint will have some nice crevices to rest in. Then I used epoxy putty to sculpt the ridges on the head. I had a bag of teeth sitting around from when I made a predator costume a few years ago so thats what I used for the horns. I know it's not symmetrical but I can live with that.

I'm waiting on more putty to get here so I can finish the helmet.

I am more of a "traditional" modern style fan but I can apreciate your build, great start should look real nice.

I too like the traditional style best, but my official mando is traditional so there is no point in making another one of the same style.

Thanks everyone!

As soon as my putty gets here I can finish the helmet and start painting it. That being being finished will definitely give me the motivation to do the rest.

While waiting on the putty to finish my helmet I sarted working on the gaunts. I sculpted 6 horns out of sculpey clay and baked them so they would harden. The armor pieces are cut out of sintra and the "leather" part of the gaunt is foam. I'm not sure if using foam for leather is acceptable but as I'm already official I don't think it matters much.

I have leather straps and buckles on order so right now the gaunt is being held closed with tape. Also the spikes are just sitting on the armor, they haven't been glued down yet as I need to bend the armor pieces a little more.

How does the fur look? I'm not sure if I want it there or not.

Finally got my putty in so I finished the horns and started working on the ridges. All the different colors were throwing me off so I gave the front a coat of primer so see how well everything is blending. I can't wait to start painting this thing.....but more ridges and bondo work to go.

Great faux painting on that "leather".

Helmet is coming along great, I was just wondering about one thing. Are you going to blend the seams of the sculpted sections or leave them as is?
