Plastic armor shaping

I purchased a 13 gallon trash can and got all the pieces I need for my armor. I do not own a heat gun and live in an apartment. Not sure about using the oven since chemicals may come out since I have a two year old as well. I heard that you can use a hair dryer. Does that actually work?
