I've heard that Aker voice amps are the way to go, but can anyone suggest a specific model or vendor to get one from? I'd hate to order one online and find out I missed a deal somewhere else.

I personally use a SEA Talk amp, so I can't really speak about the quality of the Aker amps.

Radio Shack also has a good one for about $15, but it doesn't have a mic.

The Aker is the way to go! Very loud and hassle free.

The radio shack one will work but you will need to either mod the speaker or use a powered mic to work properly.  The sound quality isn't that great either. People couldn't understand me when i used this one, never a problem with the aker even in loud environments.

I can vouch for Aker, 75% of the weight is the speaker so it's very easy to fit one inside a helmet, the circuit and battery can be hard wired with very little dificulty(at least for ME it seemed effortless...)

To expand on this thread, I have been trying to come up with a way to make this wireless as that wire is likely going to drive me nuts trooping. My other alternative was to place the speaker up near my head. All the wireless ones are like the ones I used in theater and need a large receiver, which helps nothing. Any suggestions or should I just stick to a wired one?

Aker sells a wireless headset that looks pretty compact you might find use from.

I thinks its best to go wired....the wireless system from the aker guy is great when it works.   I've heard many complaints about this system but also many praises.

I've got the Aker and it works great. I've also got the wireless upgrade for it and....it's hit or miss. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I don't use the wireless anymore. Just wasn't dependable.
