Carter's EC Build (Pic Heavy) Updates 3/10
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 01:56 AM »
So Over a year ago I began an Early Crusader Kit and then stopped to build my son's kit in a few days which burnt me out for a while. Then at a local convention, my Clan mate (who is known for her totally awesome EC kit :D ) told me I needed to finish it.  So I've been working on it here and there and though I'd Post what I have already done.

Since we can't do Repeat posts, this first one will have a lot of stuff in it.

Helmet,

I sculpted a bucket and created a thread for it, not sure what happened to it but here are some pictures of the Helmet.

Next I sculpted and cast a pair of shoulders. I'm repainting them and sorry for the crappy photos.

For the Vest I created a front and back, in heavy leather, then weathered the leather. The hose connector is surrounded by a brass piece from a woman's belt and the light bar is a brass clasp from an old purse.  Just waiting for my buckles to come in and I'll finish it up and post pictures.

Next I began working on my Backpack.

I found an old Buzz Lightyear car and tore it apart. I painted it brass and weathered it.

I decided the backpack needed hoses, but finding cloth like hoses to match the helmet was difficult, so I used plastic pipes from Hand Pumps for kerosene heaters and wrapped them in White athletic tape before painting them.

Ok now this post is getting really long, so I'll call it a night. LOL. I have plenty more pics to post tomorrow and feedback is welcome.

Later Vodes.

Nice progress man! My only critique is that I feel the backpack could do with some more organic elements incorporated into it so it's more cohesive with the style of the rest of the armour but that's just me :)

I have more organic stuff added, bone plates and leather strapping. I was just catching everyone up to where I'm at, I have several months of work and didn't want to make one supper long post.  ;D

Now for more progress pictures!

So for the tops I decided I needed something to flesh this out, I needed filters.
So I took two of these

and painted them up like this....

I took two of the hub caps, painted them brass and slapped them on top of some wire pencil cups from the dollar store to make this.

Added some blinking lights, but they were not bright enough, so I created reflectors from the tops of waterbottles and aluminum tape (sorry no pictures) and then used some wax paper to defuse the light...

Notice the plate on top? That was just a place holder for the mock up to test the light level. I have fashioned a bone plate to sit there, as well as one on the bottom.

I'll post more pictures later today or tomorrow and show you the finished back pack.  :D

^I do agree with Tracyn.

While I love the work you did on the Buzz backpack it just looks too advanced for an EC in it's current state. Maybe a leather panel on that front portion where the screw holes are? Maybe tool a primitive design into it and screw it down? Then maybe a few danglies?

I love you Carter!

You making me soooooo happy!

Awww Seugtai, have a little faith.. lol

This is just the base, most of the details your not going to see until you actually holding the piece and looking at it. You of all people should know how bad I am about every little thing has to be just right.... I think everyone will be happy once I put the bone plates, leather strapping and hoses on it...

Why can't I ever find awesome, moddable parts like the Buzz car.

Anyway, it all looks awesome, the helmet reminds me of this dragonskull I once bought for my wall.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Between work and the weather I have been placed behind schedule. So the temp dropped in the garage and my fiberglass did not set in the mold I made for the spine on my backpack. That was Saturday.  I've brought it inside for three days, added more hardener and finally gave it up for a lost cause and am scrubbing out uncured fiberglass from the mold...what fun!.

Anyway, you all were talking about the piece not looking organic enough, and I'll show you my original drawings and where I'm going with this.

(and please don't laugh, I can't draw)

Side View

as you can see, the Base is not the same shape I wanted, but it's close enough.

Comments? Advice about the uncured fiberglass? LOL Thanks

Would "It looks terrible, send to me for immediate destruction" work here? Really is a thing of beauty though.

Have a good one,
