question about sintra and fiberglass
« on: May 05, 2014, 05:33 AM »
Has anyone had any experience with laying fiberglass on top of sintra( or similar product)? I'm asking as I have an idea, however I don't know if the materials will play nice or not

I've used fiberglass on the back of plastic. You should include more detail on what you plan on doing though. Just asking for experience is vague. It stuck. But the resin can crack if the plastic is super flimsy and you bend it with force.

Well, the sintra will be formed before the fiberglass is attached. I'm looking at adding a few layers onto the chest pieces to add some texturing.

What about just using more sintra? Different thicknesses? Or is it the texture of the fiberglass that you are wanting?

Not quite sure why you'd want to add fibreglass to sintra, as Aoshi1 mentioned you can give your armor the layered appearance by adhering sintra on top of the base level plate.

Partly for texturing, but also to be able to add details such as a blaster hit on one plate,  and possible claw marks on the anotehr plate. I was thinking once the fiberglass and resin was set, getting out the saftey gear and detailing that into the plates.

There's better material than poly resin for that...try some epoxy sculpt, like Free-Form Air: http://www.smooth-on.com/Epoxy-Putty-Free-F/c1390_1391/index.html

I'd recommend using 6mm sintra then, should give enough depth to add 3d weathering.

Thanks for the info, gang! I'm intrigued by the air foam epoxy.
