Jesper's Flak vest WIP
« on: Aug 09, 2014, 07:02 PM »
Starting on a new flak vest.  I decided that my other one was rather plain and ill fitting, and I wanted to make one that had some more detail/depth as well as a more snug fit.  To start out, I made myself a duct tape dummy.  This will help me when I start the armor as well.

From there I started working on the vest.  To make this, I bought 4 different types of fabric.  A quilted nylon in a "sage" green, a bottom weight cotton in olive drab, a coyote brown cotton knit, and a black netting material (similar to whats used in practice football jerseys).  Here is where I'm currently at.

The plan is to strategically add strips of the knit to vest in order to allow it to stretch when I put it on, and return to shape.  Whether it works like I think it will is another matter.  All the layers overlap and will be edged in a black piping.  Feel free to ask any questions you may have.  I'll be doing some more work tonight and tomorrow, and hopefully will have more updates soon.

I had my roommate, who's done a few, help me.  Google however turned up like a thousand hits on the subject, so here is one of them http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Duct-Tape-Dummy-1/  :P

To be honest, I'm not sure if its going to work right either.  I've aligned the stretch knit sections vertically in thin strips in hopes of only having enough stretch to slip this on and it not move my plates.  I don't plan to attach my plates to any of the stretchy sections.  This could end up blowing up in my face, but hopefully not.  I'll find out once I'm finished  :P
