In-helmet BlueTooth with Uproar
« on: Aug 26, 2014, 10:49 AM »
I recently bought the Uproar and I want to try this to transmit to a bluetooth headset:

http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics%C2%AE-TT-BA01-Wireless-Bluetooth-Transmitter/dp/B004B8GF7Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409064265&sr=8-1&keywords=bluetooth+transmitter

What do you think?

Should work, I think. What's receiving? (RX)

So Uproar feeding data to your TX

your RX -> Helmet mounted headset?

EDIT: For that price, why not get one that does both?

The Indigo transceiver is a much better device IMHO (that's the brand I use for my BT voice amp).  You need to remember that if your BT headset has a mic and earphones, you'll only be able to use one of those over a non-smart A2DP BT device.  This is why I opted to build my own system, because I didn't want to waste the functionality of the mic or speaker.

I love what you did, Tom, and I may upgrade to that in the future. For now though, since the Uproar only sends a signal, all I want is something I can use to transmit that signal to my ears so I can hear better inside the helmet. :) But for future reference, I'll definitely consider the Indigo. I would love to have the same kind of phone setup you have someday. :D

Another guy used this one with my Uproar and said it worked pretty well-

Just about the same thing as the one you're looking at.

Got it to work! After (duh) reading the instructions this morning, I got it to pair with my headset. There is about a 1/4 second delay in the sound, though...

Now to test and see if it will pair with my phone at the same time. :)

Bluetooth will only pair with one device at a time.

Also, that delay is going to really get on your nerves after awhile.   ;)

Nothing you can do about the delay, it's a by-product of wireless transmission.

  Oh well.

After a quick test run, I've noticed that to make this work better, I need to tweak a few things.

1) Switch the mics. As they are, with a regular set of headphones they work fine for L & R sides. I even made sure to install the left mic on the left side and the right on the right. My headset picks up my phone and tablet just fine as well. But for some reason, the Blutooth transmitter swaps the signal and I'm hearing the left on the right and the right on the left.

2) Isolate the mic heads. As they are, the mics are glued in place...and they pick up every single scratch, bump and shuffle of the exterior of the helmet. I know a little rubber o-ring won't completely eliminate the extra, but it will help.

3) Pad out the interior of the bucket. The one thing I really noticed was that the mics are very sensitive and picked up my voice very well. I'm thinking of adding some padding on the inside where the mics will sit to isolate them even further and hopefully cut down on it picking up my voice. I know that won't completely stop it, but it should help.

David.

You can also try and place a resistor on the output line of your mic to reduce the gain.  Electret mics are normally omni-directional so another possible solution is taking a small piece of heat-shrink tubing and sliding that over the mic with around 3-4mm of extra HSt.  Use your soldering iron to shrink down the extra HST to create a cone that will significantly reduce omni-directional sounds being picked up.

Like a reverse of the old hearing aid cone, right? Hm...never thought of that. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Never hurts to try. :)

Could a throat mic work? Would it be allowed?

I haven't built my armor just yet, but if I have trouble hearing I will look into something like this...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/INCREDIBLE-EAR-HEARING-AMPLIFIER-AID-EXTRA-BATTERIES/160631623464?_trksid=p2054897.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3D61625172fabe4d85b06771c0b9b6c53c%26pid%3D100204%26prg%3D20140407115239%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D30%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D130774186403

It looks like you can plug in any headphones. I'm thinking these would work. They even have inline volume control.

http://www.dx.com/p/motorcycle-helmet-headphones-headset-for-mp3-player-gps-black-3-5mm-plug-240105?tc=USD&gclid=CLShlZHM_cICFeVj7Aod_SYARw#.VKrm7nuVmiw

My soft parts are going to be black so I could likely hide it pretty well somewhere near the helmet.
