Bucket 98% complete!
« on: Nov 03, 2014, 11:26 PM »
I am flat broke, but I cannot make or mod a helm. I don't have the tools, time or workspace. Where can I buy a helm for $100 or less, shipped? Is anyone selling one? It can be a blank, I have no issue painting, but I need it to be certifiable. Thanks for the help, guys.

My advice would be to chat to your local clan in WA...They might be able to point you somewhere or help you out.
Failing that keep an eye on the trading section as you'll be surprised what pops up.

There was a guy making buckets for about $60 in the trading station blank rondo cast.

Does anyone make some sort of voice projector? I imagine my voice would be mighty muffled.

I've heard that Aker voice amps are the way to go.

I was looking into it, but they are clunky and expensive. I might have to go that way, though.

I got a couple small exciters from Parts Express for a few bucks and stuck them to the insides of the cheekplates. They become the "speaker" membranes. Then I gutted a $15 Radio Shack voice amp to keep just the circuit board, power switch/volume control, and mic jack. A soldering iron has a fairly short learning curve, if you're not adept already. Rewiring the power supply wires to go to a battery pack, the speaker wires to go to the exciters, and enclosing the parts being kept in some scrap plastic is fairly quick and easy. The trickiest part becomes finding a nice unidirectional, backshielded mic so you don't get feedback.

A less-engineered solution is to get said Radio Shack voice amp and a headset or throat mic, run the wire inside your flight suit, and mount the amp in a belt pouch.

Bucket came today!!! I am so hyped! It needs to be trimmed and all that jazz, though. Any suggestions on trimming the vents, visor, and the fringy crap at the bottom of the helm? It is a new Commando by Head Shot Props.

Dremel and then diamond files or sand paper for the finishing touches.

How would I go about using a Dremel? Like, what bit would I use?

I used a cutting wheel for the visor area just to get the majority of it out, I then switched to a sanding or grinding wheel for the rest, finishing up with a diamond file for the tight spaces (mine is the NME Assassin), and sandpaper to end it off. For the keyslots on the back I used a drill bit and then diamond files.

Hmm. Would it be possible to do purely by X-acto knife?

I'm not sure how thick his casts are, it may be difficult but if you do lots of passes with one it should work.

It seems pretty thick, but this is the only helmet I have ever interacted with. What would I know? lol

Any advice on how to install the ears? They are just caps, no RF.

Thanks! Any suggestions on getting stripes on? I realized that taping it straight was harder than it looked. I plan on having a thick khaki stripe down the middle with two thinner stripes on either side.
