Question Regarding Cutting Plastic
« on: Apr 22, 2017, 04:58 PM »
Hi!

I'm sure when I post this it will say I am new. I am. Been lurking a while as I came up with my ideas and looked at all the amazing work you all have done. I do finally have a question as I start really getting into my project.

Looked at all the different ways to make female armor and decided to purchase a plastic female body form. I have a good idea of how I want to design the shape of the armor but I am hesitant to begin cutting until I have a good idea of HOW.

So my question is: Does anyone has recommendations of how to cut the form when I am ready to do so? I have a dremmal and I'm aware of using a cutting blade. Is there any tips if I decide to go this route?

Thanks again. Glad that there are places like this to get some help and ideas. Really looking forward to getting head deep into this. Any help is always welcomed!

Slow and careful.  It's said a lot, especially with power tools, but going slow and being careful is pretty much the best advice you can follow.  Impatience causes you to slip, which causes damage to materials, which needs to be repaired afterward.  So, be patient and let the tool do its job, use your hand to guide it.

You'll also want a sanding drum for your dremel too if you don't already have one.  Some of the tight curved cuts are easier if you don't try to go right next to the line, but rather cut near to it, then make an angled cut across the off-cut material, then grind it down with the sanding drum.

A good rule of thumb (to keep your thumbs) is keep your eye on the blade and don't apply to much pressure. When cutting PVC foam board cut 6mm at least 6 times and 3mm at least 3. A good pair of leather working gloves also wouldn't hurt for extra protection  :)

Let the yool do the work, if you have one with multiple speed settings, use a higher setting. Slower revs are harder on the tool, and the material being cut. Also, when cutting curves, remember that the disc won't flex. Cut the curve in shallow passes, then sand after.

Slow and steady and don't put too much pressure on your tools. Sand, sand and then sand some more. More than anything don't be afraid. Any mistakes made can always be turned into awesome battle damage. Look forward to seeing your progress pics!

THANKS! I'm pretty close to making a WIP board. Not exactly sure I will be submitting to be an official member. Mostly because 1. I'm new 2. I'm intimidated 3. Because I have a certain plan for my inspiration and I'm scared it won't fit the guidelines. BUT I figured the community here would appreciate my picture spam of my my build more than my FB timeline.

I don't think 1 or 2 should stop you from being an official member. And I highly suggest posting your concept up. Even if your certain plan doesn't completely fit the guidelines, we'll do our best to work with you to figure out a compromise. I say this, because unless you're an official member, you won't be able to troop at events - which I think are some of the most rewarding experiences for being the Mercs.

But regardless of what you choose to do, I know I'm excited for your progress and your build no matter what it is.

Thanks for the advice. I know you're right. It's just so intimidating! LOL I really admire all the work people on here do. If I can do it half justice I would be happy.

Just remember, alot of the kits you see around here, are the product of years of upgrades and refinements. Really, official membership is a stepping off point, you never stop upgrading.

I know it so intimidating at first but you can do it! I had never built anything so intricate before. This community is so supportive and everyone is so willing to help. I was able to build my kit almost entirely on my own and just a few months after I finished mine I was able to make an awesome kit for my daughter. Even if you decide not to become OM, I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Reach out if you need help. 😉
