Filler & adhesive of choice?
« on: Mar 22, 2015, 10:02 AM »
Hey guys.

I am brand new to the weapon prop making game & I had a couple of questions.

1.  What do you use to fill seams & holes in your projects?

2.  What kind of glue do you use to adhere greeblies & whatnot to your projects?

Thanks!

To fill seams and holes, bondo or epoxy putty... And for attachment, I think it might depend on the medium, but I have used superglue and wood glue. I have heard jb weld for metal stuff, and I have also seen E6000 or something like that...

to fill holes, I like bondo, wood filler or 3m glazing putty. kombi or bondo glazing putty for really small holes. just depends on the size of the hole, and what the substrate with the hole is made from (ie wood, metal, plastic, etc.)

for gluing wood, you can not beat titebond liquid hide glue. Kind of difficult to find sometimes, but it is absolutely the best for wood, but all of the titebond series work great.

for anything else, I like old fashioned epoxy putty, the 30minute / 5 ton kind is best, but the 5minute kind will work in a pinch!

superglue is goof  for small stuff and greeblies, but not for structural stuff or clear stuff. the fumes fog up clear stuff.

good luck with it all!

Bondo or Jb Weld for filling, E6000 for adhering.  JB Weld can also be handing for holding stuff together, but I find it fills large gaps in things pretty wonderfully.

If you don't really have the option of working outside: Testors Contuor putty and epoxy putty for filling (testor's contour putty works great on small holes and gaps).

I have found superglue works just fine for holding most of the time. When it's not, 2 part epoxy was my friend. A few things (namely my visor) got hot glued in place, but for the most part I would the stuff as a permanent adhesive.

I had to get a bit creative, because I live in a small, 1 bedroom apartment (when I started my suit, I lived in a studio apartment) Bondo and the like are simply not really an option.
