Herz's first WOF scratchbuild bucket
« on: Feb 27, 2015, 06:45 PM »
Welp, managed to score some Sintra for cheap from a local sign shop. Finally decided to make my own scratchbuild bucket vs using a modified Hasbro bucket I was working on.

Items used:
Cardstock
Cardboard
3mm Sintra
WOF templates
Skateboard helmet

Progress so far

The visor and rest of the bucket were first formed over a large glass jar. Then taped around the form provided in the WOF templates and then further formed to match it with a heat gun.

Fitment was tested and a wee bit more tweaking took place.

Some minor tweakage was needed in order to allow my nose to not be squashed by the visor. I'm around 6'3" and wear an XL to XXL helmet. So maybe 104% wasnt the best sizing to choose... But I do like the fit so far.

The mandible was then formed a bit and tested with some cardstock.

Further test fitting

Next, I took a protec style childrens skateboarding helmet and lopped it in two. Holding it together temporarily with hot glue (as were the other pieces) to test fitting.

So far I'm very pleased with the results and fitment. Although it may look a wee bit off sizing wise with my arm supporting the back in photos, I'm super happy with the fitment and how much neck is exposed along with the sizing.

More to come!

Small update. After using some glue to hold all of the current parts together. I've started to fiberglass the seams and most of the inside for now.

Currently heading to walmart here in a few to pick up some fiberglass resin as the jelly is overly annoying to work with.

Switching over the the actual resin should prove to be alot cleaner for the rest of the helmets interior. Then I can start with filler to fix the seams and smooth everything out.

Will do and thanks, vod!

Few more updates.
Fiberglass is good enough on the inside to start the bondo work on the exterior.

Also picked up the start to my visor, aswell as the start to a nice lil trophy from a fallen jedi.  ;)

Visor test fit is a success!

Once the rest of the helmet is fleshed out I'll remove the film and proceed with the mirror/tinting process.

Started working in some bondo to start smoothing all the parts together and fill the holes in the helmet. Think I may be done with progress for today and start on the rest tomorrow. Once I get all the parts smoothed together I'll go back with a much smoother layer of bondo to get it all nice and clean looking.

Super pleased for now! Once I finally get this thing all nice and done I'll finally start on my armor and the rest of the suit.

Thanks again vod!

Currently needing to go pick up some 200 or lower grit sandpaper so I can shape this body filler a bit better.

Currently been stuck with files and 600 grit for now.

Currently debating on how I want to do my earcaps. I have been toying with the idea of my range finder being on the left side or not going with one at all.

(Mostly due to the fact I'm blind in my right eye and my Mando will be aswell.)

Slow progress. Got a new puppy and not much time to work on the bucket. But! Made some progress with finally getting some 80 grit sandpaper. Need to go back with some bondo after smoothing all of this out.

Really pleased with how its coming along. Hopefully I'll have this all smoothed out and finished up. Then I can finally start on the earcaps and other greeblies.

Quick visor test. Still loads of smoothing to do on the helmet and fitting issues to fix with the visor before I can start paint.

But, that didnt stop me from testing out the tint for my visor. I think I'm going to run this dark tint in the rear and a mirrored tint upfront.
