Late Crusader/Rohlan Helmet Base Question
« on: Mar 06, 2015, 04:10 AM »
Due to some modifications I want to make to a Rohlan-style helmet (to make it unique), I want to scratch-build my helmet instead of buying one.

So the question is:

For individuals who have scratch-built a late Crusader/Rohlan helmet, what did you use as a base? I've seen a lot of people using buckets and hard-hats for modern helmets, but due to the curved nature of the back, it seems to me that would be out of the picture.

Note: I will be mounting electronics and a small fan into the helm, so a sturdier material is preferable.

If anyone knows a previous thread answering my question, I apologize, I made numerous searches but they all came up empty.

What I did for mine, and how I would build a Rohlan would be pepakura.    Build it out of thin cereal-box cardboard then fiberglass it.  Check my WIP for a walkthrough of the process to see if it is something you are willing to try.

I see what you mean. And lucky enough, working at best buy I have access to single ply-thin plasticboard that I can trace the pepkura's onto.

It seems I could use a halo style pepkura and essentially turn it backwards to use the brim over the visor as the helmet armor that sticks off the back.

Thing is, I downloaded a few pepkuras to try to edit them and I can't seem to figure out how to edit the paper flaps. Are you able to modify the model besides scaling in the program? Or Would I have to modify it by hand?

There are two versions of the pep software; the free one is a viewer only, the paid one is an editor
