Clan Radio Communication
« on: Apr 23, 2015, 04:50 PM »
I'm looking for a radio/walkie-talkie system that would allow clan communication at an event. We would like to be able to talk to one another on several channels (for example: those on patrol, the table, officers etc) and hopefully a system that could accommodate any voice amp systems.  I understand that the range listed is under ideal or amazing conditions and not con environments but even if three or four members could communicate at an event without a loudspeaker this would be ideal. thank you for your help!

Group Skype call through a headset would probably be your best bet. Get the mobile app, or have a laptop running with it on under the table or something like that, then get wireless headset connected to it(or wired if you want to do the mobile app) run it up through the neck seal onto the helmet, and viola. Cheap. Just gotta get a headset that would work.

problem is that it would drain battery on the phone really quick and would require a WiFi or Data connection (which isn't always readily available/fast at a con).  Your best bet is probably a set of multi channel walkies (relatively cheep at electronics stores) and a set of low profile head sets/throat mics.  I am sure there is a way to tie it all into your speaker if you really want, but I'd have to sit down and think it all through and see what is out there.

Our clan ( well, command staff at least ) uses Puxing PX 777 walky talkies. They run the wire under their neckseal and vest, locating the PTT button at waistlevel. The walky Talkie is put in a pouch. With a fully charged battery they can go an entire day of normal usage. Range is also bad shebs, used it at last con and we were able to communicate from the parking lot all the way indoors to the folks at the table ( aprox 1Km straight line, 1 party was inside a large building, so lots of concrete/steel ) and transmission was crytal clear. You don't have to use any strange contraption a la Skype with a server and stuff and it costs nothing extra. Hope this helps :)

The Puxing sounds awesome! Does it have multiple channels? Does it allow more than two people to join a channel? Finally can I link it with other walkie-talkies of the same brand, or are they paired?

It has a wide band to choose from, so as long as someone's walkie is on that frequency, they are able to join in ( unlimited number of people, but only 1 peerson can talk while the rest listens at a time ), don''t know about other walkies, probably yes if they have the same frequency set :)

Wouldn't there be an issue of bleeding over into the channels/frequencies that Con staff are using though?

most of the high end long range walkies I have seen/used have about 8-10 channels, never have I seen them all used by a particular organization.  there is usually 3 or more left open at the high end of the spectrum.  but yes, that is a risk

I picked up an old, and I mean old 5-channel Voice-operated hands-free Walkie-Talkie at a thrift shop the other day.  I was looking for something with a speaker unit because I apparently have a soft voice, and people have trouble hearing me on the best of days.  It's a Radio Shack 21-407.

Just a quick word of warning those Puxing PX 777's. They can transmit on frequencies most people aren't allowed to transmit on.  Some are amateur radio (ham radio) and some are used in law enforcement/fire/ems/public safety.

They can however, operate on FRS and GMRS freqs, which are fine to use. (There are some restrictions on antennas and output power, but I worry less about some of those rules for short term use in an area)

Best to do some research and make sure you're not breaking any laws when you're trying communicate with your clan.

yes the 2 pronged connector is quite common on high end walkies

Oh, just high end?  So those probably won't work on something I pick up at Wal-Mart?  At least I found this out before I bought anything.

For most "walmart" level walkie talkies, they use a single pin 2.5mm connector.  The higher end radios use the 2 pin connectors.

There are throat mics out there that use that connector, just have to find them.  Some might use a standard 3.5mm jack (headphone jack size) but you can use a reducer too.

This is what my wife and I use when we're out at a theme park, hiking or at any really large event.  They are legal for use by anyone, no license required, as they don't have the capability of disrupting military, police, fire or emergency freqs.

http://www.buytwowayradios.com/products/motorola/motorola-mh230r.aspx?source=voltage&gclid=Cj0KEQjwkv-rBRDwoMLav-2l9KIBEiQAUTkDU4XT6RJ_t5TnPDWSbJYk-35fWkRhpM2E8dDtw8Oe0LUaAmIi8P8HAQ

They work really well, although I wouldn't say that they have a 23 mile range as stated in the "Features" on this page.  All FRS/GMRS walkies share the same channels and privacy codes...some models have a longer battery life and better range, but for what you're talking about these should be fine.

Here's a link to an awesome radio site. Have ordered from here several times. www.radioddity.com lots of user programmable handhelds to choose from. Walmart units are half watt transmission, these ones are 4 or 5 watt, some up to eight watt transmission. I have several. Lots of support on how to use these.
