Mercy - The big belt is finally finished...
« on: Jun 19, 2015, 12:04 AM »
Hey all...

The other day while I was waiting for adhesive to cure on the armor, my mind wandered off to belts.
And then my inner redneck decided to drop in.

What goes with a big ol' armored belt?
A big ol' armored belt buckle of course!

So, I went with my favorite new technique, carving laminated sintra, and came up with this guy...

Needs a bit of cleanup, some bondo, and a blackwashed pewter paintjob.

I was so pleased with how this was going, I brainstormed the belt itself at work today, and stopped at WallyWorld on the way home to buy supplies.

5" wide, a stiff backer fabric wrapped in cloth. I found this material that looks amazingly like cracked red/black leather (kinda feels like it too). I might go back and do my kama and cape with this...It looks sweet.

Two cheap brown leather belts riveted into place...

and a few with the unfinished buckle in place...

(last one is a bit grainy. rear facing camera isn't as good as the front one)

Still need the final fabric trim and tuck, and the rest of the rivets in place to hold the belts, but as far as the camera can tell, she's done.

Feedback and ideas welcomed.

I'm speechless, belt and buckle look amazing. Im loving the double buckles too, and that material is spot on. I'm not sure how well a leather-type fabric would work for a cape though, it might be too stiff to have a nice drape to it.

It's actually very light and flexible. I'd compare it to duck canvas with a nicer finish.
Here's whats left of the 1/2 yard I bought. I think it would drape fine. The only thing I'm not sure on is the fact that it look's so real...it might look wrong as a cape.

Yea, I saw...very cool look :)

I really like the color and texture, so I think I'll pick up some more of the material this weekend.

That belt is fantastic.  I don't know if the buckle is acceptable, it might be too western, but the belt is a beauty.  Looking forward to seeing this cape, too.

LOL! Living in Arizona, I guess the western influence is inevitable. Mythosaur skull replacing the longhorn skull...   :D

Thanks for the complements.

Mercy, vod - what is the name of that fabric.  It is so awesome, and I'd love to use that in my kit as well (if you don't mind).  I just can't figure out what to search for, and I checked my local walmart and saw nothing of the sort.  Hoping you had a name to go with it.  Vor'e!

Don't know off the top of my head, but when I get some more tomorrow I'll make sure and write the name down.
The lady there said it was new and they never had it before.

OK the tag was kind of mangled, but here's what I could read:
style 3614, faux leather
General Fabrics, Pawtucket RI, made in China
35% polyester, 57% polyurethane, 8% viscose

It's medium thick, but still a cosmetic fabric...not tough like canvas or anything.
I don't think it would survive any roughousing, but I don't think light weathering wouldn't be a problem.
Check it out for your application before buying.

OK, I've been putting off finishing this for a while now. I wanted to get some practice with the apoxie sculpt first so I wouldn't screw it up too badly.
All of the gaps and buggered up cuts in those tiny nooks and crannies have been filled. Once it cures she'll get a good finish sanding.
