Rangefinder Servo (Need an idea)
« on: Aug 13, 2015, 01:15 AM »
So I just installed an RC Servo in my helmet, and after a couple days, I got it working. Now my problem is that the Rangefinder doesn't want to stay in the UP position. If I tilt my head forward even a little, the RF comes down. I used TDH zip zap tutorial after many issues doing it myself. Is it just the servo isn't strong enough? I'm at a loss. Thanks for any help with this.

What do you think about using a magnet to hold it in the UP position? Of course, do some experimenting to make sure the servo is strong enough to overpower the magnet when you want to lower the rangefinder.

Yea, I thought about the magnet too, but I discovered my stock isn't magnetic.

Would it compromise the integrity of the stalk to drill a hole in it to fit a magnet inside?

:)  I'd say, give it a shot and see.  I think it goes without saying that I recommend a dry run before you start drilling into your stalk and bucket.

Replace the servo. All servos are DC motors with a reduction and a control board. So, if you use a stronger servo it will hang the antena even with his weight. My antena is pretty light because it's 3D printed. Yours must be resin or somthing. I had the same problem before, but a strong servo can hold it in place.

In my RF I used an Arduino and in the programming a friend helped me program so when ever its "off" and not in the "up" possition it goes "up". The servo is always working and buzzes wonderful in my ear. For me, the next part is to change where the button is from my helmet to my gauntlet.

I am going to replace the servo, I think it died. But my stalk of my rangefinder is aluminum and the top is solid resin. But I just 3D printed a full rangefinder so I'm going to give that a try too.
