A question on weathering
« on: Jun 08, 2017, 11:35 AM »
Going through the app process and looks like I'm pretty close, with the only piece of feedback being that my suit/vest need to be weathered to match the rest of my kit.  Problem is, my kit is weathered with blaster fire, smoke, etc. so most of it's dark brown, blacks, etc. none of which shows up that well on my black suit/vest.

I thought of using chalk/gravel dust which is mostly light grey/white to weather the soft parts, but then that seems a bit odd that only the soft parts have light weathering, and I really don't want to re-weather the whole kit with white as that's not realistic, e.g. smoke, blaster fire doesn't leave white burn marks.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.  I'm close and hoping some past experience will help get it right the next time.

Pics for reference

If you have an old beat up pair of jeans and an old beat up shirt, look closely at them where they're faded, stained, and worn out.  It'll mostly be at the seams, which for your kit you can weather by rubbing the seams with sandpaper.  Brown washes and dusts also show up on black.  You can also mist it with spraypaint.  When black fabric burns or scorches, it usually turns brown.

I had a similar issue and recommended this to someone else.  Be counter intuitive.  Black and brown don't show up easy on black.  So go the opposite route.  Use light grey, white, yellow, and lightly muddy them.  The light on dark contrast will make the weathering pop without tearing up your soft parts.  Acrylic and fabric paints and dyes will pull it off nicely.

What they said. Think about it. Did you sit on something dirty, kneel down, brace your elbows on a wet log to get that 100 yard kill shot, brush up against a crumbling mud wall with your shoulder. All these things should be present. When I did my soft parts (green and brown) I used black spray paint and fabric dye to make it looked like I got sweaty and rolled in the ground during my last fight. Sweat usually shows as salt stains on black, so yeah, it is a little counter intuitive.

Congrats on your kill stripes.  That weathering looks awesome on your kit.
