I've got a home-brew system I cooked up using an old radioshack voice amp.  Yeah, I was impressed with how well it sounded.

No, I never did one up.  It's pretty simple:  1.  Crack open a radioshack voice amp.  2.  Cut out the stock speaker.  3.  Replace stock speaker with 2 laptop speakers (wired in series).  4.  Plug in a powered lapel mini-mic.  Position speakers so the sound travels out of the helmet.  Since my MS:C helmet has vents on the cheek sides it was pretty easy to cut those out and let the sound travel through them.

Make sure you toss the actual housing box.  Your circuitry will be exposed in the helmet, so if you sweat alot you might think about covering it up with some electrical tape.
