Del Duroon the Hunter - Soft Parts Start (Pic Intensive)

Well, I've had most of this for several months to a year and have finally started to get moving on this as well.  I have made many of the cuts I need, but the sewing has to wait for my wife to finish her projects.  The "kama" portion is still too long, so fabric will need to be cut there.  So don't worry about that.

Here's what I have

Flight suit: Olive Green
Over Suit: Dark Brown
This is wear all the armor attachments will be.  You'll notice the button up front.  This will be covered by specially made chest armor attachment.  The Over Suit (as I call it) will also double as a kama in the lower portion.
Ammo Pouches: Brown Leather
Boots: Brown leather.
These are a temporary Goodwill find that my wife really likes.  So, no modification on these as my wife has currently forbade it.  However, I will be looking for a similar pair to modify.  They have a lot of similar qualities to the Boba Fett boot.
Cape: Tan/Khaki
This is made out of a duck cloth.  Just bought a small yard of it and frayed it a bit.  This will be attached to the shoulders a la Boba Fett style.  (Will be using key board keys as the attachment points.)

Planned Additions
Gloves:Brown leather or brown cotton gloves.
I think I may be going with the brown cotton gloves and then add bits and pieces to make them look beefier.  Thoughts?
Boot (Ankle) Spats: Brown (same fabric as Over Suit)
By now you will have noticed I am going for a light Mandalorian Class.  The spats were inspired by Boba Fetts.  (Here's a reference from Boba Fett:)
Holster and Belt: Dark Brown Nylon for belt.  Unknown on holster at this time. (Thoughts?)

Well, tell me what you think?

Not to sound like a nag, but does anyone have any input.  I suppose I could assume since no one has commented that it looks fine, but ya'll know what happens when you assume....

I'll jump in here then!
First off, I really dig the colors.  It definitely has a really good feel to it.
As far as the gloves go, I would recommend cloth gloves with some leather attached at points like the top of the hand and knuckles to make them look beefier. Just my two cents.
A Jango-esque style holster might look good with leather straps coming down from the codpiece.  I'm not sure whether you'd want the holsters to sit under the kama or on top of it, though.

A little critique: I think the cape makes it look a bit too fabric heavy.  All your soft parts with the cape included almost looked like a costume in itself.  If you really want to keep the cape, think about making it shorter or thinner... Or both.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

I agree with the previous comment about having a kama and a cape. I'd probably go with one, not both. Which one? That's your call but see what looks better. If you're gonna be adding holsters, you might reconsider the kama and do the cape instead.

Awesome guys, that's the kind of critique I need.  I'll definitely keep it in mind.  I think once I get the plates on, I'll be able to get a much better idea of the direction.

Thanks again!

My thing about kamas and capes is this (as somebody who uses both): if you're going to have both, I think the cape needs to be a short cape or more like Boba's.

That makes a lot of sense. Don't really need to add to the coverage below the waist if you're already rockin' the kama. Good suggestion. ;)

I love capes, but that kit actually looks great without one. I like the way the kama seems to mesh with the shirt.  Your color scheme is perfect, as usual.

I agree that a leather holster will fit this rugged look best. You'll probably want it on your thigh in the dropleg style, and you may have to pull or even trim back the kama to keep the holster accessible.

The kama and the shirt are a once piece unit.  I took a 60's era pair of army coveralls (Click Here for Example) and died it dark brown and then went to town on them with a pair of scissors.  I have cut the kama portion back a little bit and may do more later.  And I think you are right, a leather holster would look the best... but frugality does have its place.  As I am sure I'll be the one making it.  After looking at the various images, I think I may forgo the cape, but that means a back plate.  I'm not a big fan of the classic, so I may have to get to work on my back pack plans...  Anyone else just so excited they want their kit to be done...  :(

I kinda like the kama/shirt one piece thing, kinda like an armored trench coat.  Just a few things I want to suggest:

The sleeves of the overcoat/vest shold probably be hemmed as right now in those pics they look a bit frayed.

The pants kind of bunch up at your ankles so you may want to do something to reign that in a bit.  I believe you mentioned spats, that may be enough, but you may still need to hem the pants to correct that.

I believe you have a backpack in the works anyway that I recall seeing the WIP from.  Will this cape you have now be just like Boba's: off to the side to show off your backplate and backpack?

I look forward to seeing what you do with your kit as so far all of your WIP projects that I've seen look very cool!   ;D

Oh and for the frugality of holsters:  I used left over trash can plastic (my whole kit is Trash Can) to form a holster then used spary adhesive to attach the leather cut from an old leather jacket I bought from my local Goodwill store for about 5 bucks.  The result came out looking pretty good in my opinion... then again I am biased.  lol   ;D

Hope that helps you!

Sorry for the long delay...

The sleeves of the overcoat/vest shold probably be hemmed as right now in those pics they look a bit frayed.

This is pre-sewn and pre-hemmed.  Waiting for my wife to finish the slip cover for the couch.  So, as soon as that is done... I should get that part finished up.

The pants kind of bunch up at your ankles so you may want to do something to reign that in a bit.  I believe you mentioned spats, that may be enough, but you may still need to hem the pants to correct that.

As I was looking through my closet, I came across a pair of WW I leather spats I bought at a flea market for $15.00.  I may use those.  Though I need to fix the leather a bit and the straps are broken.  If that doesn't work, I will be tightening up and narrowing the bottoms significantly.

I believe you have a backpack in the works anyway that I recall seeing the WIP from.  Will this cape you have now be just like Boba's: off to the side to show off your backplate and backpack?
I may not use the cape as someone mentioned, it does appear rather fabric heavy.  However, once everything is up and ready, I may still use it.  It'll be a bit shorter and will be off to the side like Boba's.

Oh and for the frugality of holsters...

Awesome... Exactly what I was looking for!  You made my day with that one vod!

Also, I have an addition to my "soft parts".  This is my "Gundark" claw and tooth necklace.  (Made from PVC pipe.) And... I will be adding a few more teeth.  A couple of larger ones and perhaps a couple more smaller ones.

The inspiration kinda hit me.  It was pretty easy.

1. Pic a claw pattern.  (Mine was in my head. )
2. Draw it on the pvc pip.  I use 3 inch.  The PVC was nice and thin.
3. Cut it out with a dremel.
4. Sanded it down a bit with dremel sander to create sharp edges.
5. Heat and shape with heat gun.
6. Add plastic epoxy to create that bumpy part.
7. Paint with appliance epoxy.  Acrylic paint for color and detail.  Black, brown, dark brown and yellow.
8. Spray with flat clear coat.  Voila

The teeth were similar.  Used a thicker PVC pipe and didn't need to heat or shape.  Just sanded down.

I could do a WIP if anyone is interested.

Well, thanks to Bazii's inspiration, I am now about 85% complete on my holster.  Need to add some straps basically.  This will be a drop leg or thigh style holster when complete.

Whatcha ya'll think?

And here's a comparison of the holster to the original brown vinyl I used.  A little bit of acrylic paints to dirty it up...

It llooks great!  I'm sure it took some work to custom fit it to that blaster.

I'm no expert on holsters, but will you need a bit more material on the front to better secure the weapon?  It kinda looks like it's barely sitting in the holster.  That's the only caveat I can see, though.

The gun fits snugly.  I used a heat gun and 2 sizes of PVC pipe to shape it.  The holster itself is made out of a 6 inch PVC sewer pipe.  :)  It is covered in dark brown vinyl.

I will be adding a retention strap to secure the gun and to cover the trigger.  May be adding a thigh "plate" but that is still in the debating stage.  I will, however, be adding a thigh strap.

Well, I'm opting not to put a retention strap.  It fits in snug and since it is Star Wars after all, I'm going to say it is held in via magnetic retention and only I can draw it.  ;)  And, it can only be fired by me, hence the reason not to cover the trigger.  Cop out... maybe, but oh well.

Here's the holster strapped to my leg.  Just need to attach it to a belt and I am good to go.

Comments?

Just a suggestion-I think the inside edge of the holster needs the same weathering as the outside. It stands out a bit. Other than that I really like the design and the materials you used, excellent job making it "look" like a formed leather holster.

Yeah, I see what you mean.  I had to do some reforming and gluing on that and really wasn't focused on it.  That's why we put our pics up... so others can see what we missed.

Well, after much feedback and thought, I have come up with a strap.  Blending the old with the new, I think this works.

Also, fixed the "weathering" on the inside edge as pointed out by seugtai.  (Good eye vod.)

Now, I need to touch up the paint on the gun because all the fitting and such have rubbed down the paint so the orange is showing.  :(

I liked it without the strap but, I do like the added strap as well. Glad I could help, I'm just crazy about stuff like that. ;)
Are you planing on leaving the other straps as is or are you going to give them the same faux treatment as the holster?

I'd also like to see that tutorial on how you did those PVC claws, that's something I'd like to try. If your still interested in posting that up.
