A question about visibility
« on: Nov 04, 2010, 02:19 AM »
Okay, so before anybody says, "Go read this," I already looked at the helmet sizing topic to see if my question would be answered there first. It wasn't.

A couple days ago I was at the costume shop, looking over clearance items from the post-Halloween sales, and I came across a Captain Rex bucket. It looked pathetic, but I thought, "What the heck, why not try it on?"

I could not see ANYTHING. I mean, I could see light from the outside world, but it looked like someone had literally smeared vaseline on my eyeballs. I could see blobby shapes moving that I assumed were other people.

So it got this noob to wondering... when my bucket finally arrives, am I going to have this same visibility problem? I mean, I know I've read other posts mentioning visibility, but for someone who is pretty much brand-new to this, how IS the visibility in a typical "Meets the CRL standards" bucket? I assume that the cheaply made Halloween Rex bucket used the worst possible material for the visor, but is there a learning (or seeing) curve when putting on a bucket for the first time?

If it is difficult to see, are there any steps to take to improve vision while wearing a bucket? I wear glasses most of the time but I can wear contacts.

Thanks for any answers regarding this topic. :)

I know in my bucket (Jango 2pc) that my forward vision if really good but up/down and peripherals are lacking. Just make sure you get a good visor and you won't have too many issues.

Yeah, with the limited opening of the T-visor you're visibility will be limited. Depending on which kind of helmet you have, you may be able to open the "hat" of the T up a little to help give a bit more visibility...

The typical light level visibility should be about the same as wearing sunglasses, and the typical clarity of vision shouldn't be anywhere near as bad as you describe.  Angle is the only hangup, so get used to not seeing your feet.

You're going to have limited visiblity and it will be slightly tinged by the visors colors you use However, it should be clear. If what you were describing for teh vision in that Rex helmet was accurate, you probably put your head into a bucket people with filthy paws had worn and people had sneezed in etc.  A dirty visor is teh only thing that would cause unclear vision.

I have 4 buckets at the house (an asok cold cast, a FP, and 2 rubies 2-piece). The FP and one of the rubies has the shade 5 cutting torch lense and the other two have t-visor.com tinted ones. None have any problems with clarity. All have limited range of view due to the t-visor slits. The shade 5 is quite a bit darker than the t-visor.com ones.

The look you are describing almost sounds like someone super glued the visor back in place at one point. Those fumes will fubar the plastic visor material and it will not wipe off. You get a decent bucket with a good visor and you'll have no problems.

the best visors i have seen and use regularly on all my bucket build are a weilding visor from airgas. it is easy to cut and very easy to shape into the bucket a little hot glue to hold it down and you are set. use the green tinted one. its usually cheaper than the dark tinted and it is more accurate to the screen used boba helmet. visibility is clear as long as it is clean. the green tint appears dark while wearing it and you cant see any facial features behind it. as far as vision everyone on here is correct. the only way to increase it is to open the hat of the visor or trim the top corners on the mandibles.  :-\

Keep in mind too that the visors in the store bought helmets are the crummy plastic ones.  Pretty much everyone replaces their visors with high quality plastic/lexan visors.

I've worn my helmet at night and had no issues at all other than really dark areas (which would be the same case with wearing sunglasses).

That is the first thing I thought of when I read your description of the view.  All I can say is EW!   :o  I hope you washed your head very, very well afterwards!!   ;D

I know the common call is for #5, but has anyone ever tried the #3? Does it keep your face hidden enough like the #5?

Not sure, would need to be tested in bright sunlight and with camera flashes.

So dim light with flash is not good, but bright light without flash is okay?

6 of one, half a dozen of the other... ;)

No, lol, what I was saying is I tried the #3 on one of my kids helmets. If he stood near a light source or was outside, his face was completely visible. So, it would be workable in a dim light venue but any strong light source and it loses out. As for the flash, every pic Ive personally taken of a #3, even in near total darkness, the face is visible.
